Toronto CanadaThe Basics

Under the expansive umbrella of the Renascent treatment facilities located in Toronto Canada, the Lillian and Don Wright Centre offers outpatient substance abuse treatment and  comprehensive, education-based family programs. Renascent provides abstinence and 12-step based treatment and welcomes spouses, children and extended family members.

Treatment and Staff

The unique program at the Lillian and Don Wright Centre gives family members and those in treatment at any Renascent location the option of attending group therapy and educational lectures together a couple of times a month. This program typically lasts eight weeks and incorporates education about the disease of addiction, an introduction to the 12-steps and info about local support communities like Alanon, as well as individual counseling.

The program addresses the effects that the addict’s behavior has had on the family unit and breaks down in a structured way what enabling is and how to set up healthy and helpful boundaries for themselves. These programs are offered on weekdays at the Toronto location, however for those who don’t live in the area there are tele-health services available weekly. There are also frequent support groups held at this location for those how have completed the initial two month program.

The staff of Renascent are all CADCs or CSWs who not only have educational backgrounds in addiction, but the life experience of going through a treatment program of their own in order to get sober.

Extras

There is parenting workshop help at the facility that offers tips for those families who have one parent in treatment. This specialty program offers ways to communicate with the children of an addict and teach them appropriate language to talk to them about the experience of addiction and open up lines of communication for the whole family. The children’s only program, which is open to kids who are ages seven to 13, is a four-day intensive that educates kids on how to cope with the feelings that go along with a parent in a substance abuse program and how to express their feelings about it in a healthy and productive way. These workshops are given in a group setting in order to promote a sense of community and safety for the children.

In Summary

This innovative program provides affordable help for those struggling with substance abuse and their families in the Toronto area. Kids of addicts are the ones who seem to get the raw end of the deal most of the time. There are feelings of guilt, confusion and anger that rarely get channeled into something healthy or helpful. This innovative program is definitely working to take the stigma and blame out of the experience for the kids and gives them a chance to keep doing what they do best—continue being a kid.
