Recovery Centers of America LighthouseRecovery Centers of America: Lighthouse Review

Founded in 1986, Lighthouse offers medical detox, inpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment for adolescents (ages 13 to 18) and adults struggling with drug and alcohol abuse throughout New Jersey. Detox, residential and outpatient treatment are offered at the Mays Landing location and outpatient treatment is offered in Manahawkin, Ventnor City and Haddon Township. Therapeutic offerings at Lighthouse include evidence-based practices, a strong 12-step emphasis and dual diagnosis support. Lighthouse operates under the blanket of the Recovery Centers of America network.

Accommodations and Food

The residential programs at Mays Landing each have 25 beds. Clients stay in gender-specific double-occupancy rooms that are well-kept and homey, including private bathrooms. A recreation room offers comfortable couches to watch television and relax. The adolescent clients are housed in there own wing and segregated from adults at all times.

Food is prepared on-site in a cafeteria. Clients are served hot breakfast, lunch and dinner and are able to choose what they’d like to eat. In the event that they don’t want the particular menu for that day, there are always cereals, a salad bar, fruit, lunch meats and bread available. There is also a pantry on the premises, where clients can get snacks at any point in the day. Dietary restrictions or food allergies can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Substance abuse treatment for both residential and IOP programs begins with an assessment with a counselor. Based on that evaluation, clients develop goals and map out a treatment plan. Treatment always includes both individual and group therapy.

Inpatient detox treatment in a 12-bed unit is offered to both adult and adolescent clients who need medical supervision during withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. Medication-Assisted treatment (MAT) with Suboxone is available for those who are coming off of opiates. All clients who enroll in the residential program have the option to go through detox first. Typically, detox lasts from around five to seven days, and clients are supervised around the clock.

The 30-day residential program involves groups all day, with topics such as relapse prevention, development of positive coping skills for stress, anger management and nutrition. Those with dual diagnosis have access to a psychiatrist for individual sessions and medication management. Required 12-step meetings are held every night on-site for residential clients.

IOP includes group sessions three times a week from 6 to 9 pm, in addition to one hour of individual counseling. They are also are required to attend two AA/NA meetings on their own time. This can serve as aftercare for those who have recently completed inpatient or as the primary level of care. Length of the IOP program varies according to each client’s needs. After IOP, clients can step down to the outpatient level of care. The Outpatient Program meets each week for three hours of group and covers a variety of topics including the 12 steps, family and interpersonal relationships and other issues that relate to building a strong, long-term recovery.

Staff members include LADCs, physicians, registered nurses and a consulting psychiatrist. Clients in the inpatient treatment have 24/7 supervision by two nurses and two counselors. During the day, there are two doctors on site, as well as five counselors. The psychiatrist comes to the facility once a week. Outpatient programs are facilitated by counselors and LCSWs.

Extras

Both art and music therapy are offered in the residential program. In addition, yoga and Tai Chi classes are held.  A family program is offered at the Mays Landing location and meets on Monday nights from 6 to 8 pm. This program is designed to help loved ones better understand addiction, the recovery process, and the family dynamics that are involved. The program is open-ended and participants can keep coming to weekly multi-family meetings indefinitely.

For adolescents in the residential program, The School at Lighthouse provides a full, year-round educational program, with New Jersey Certified Teachers and including most academic areas of study designated by state curriculum guides. All students receive at least 10 hours of individualized instruction per week.

In Summary

For those looking for a solid rehab rooted in the 12 steps, that caters to both adults and adolescents, Lighthouse Substance Abuse Services is a great pick. With several locations, a highly-trained staff and a variety of services, this program can help clients reach their maximum potential.
