While full-time residential care may be too intensive for some, Lighthouse Recovery Center offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that caters to individual needs. Located in Midvale, a suburb of Salt Lake City, this facility keeps things small and intimate, taking on a maximum of eight clients at a time. Through group and individual therapy, clients begin to restructure their thought patterns and behaviors.

Accommodations and Food

Lighthouse Recovery Center occupies a small, converted house. Clients spend most of their time in the main group room, which is filled with plenty of chairs, windows and neutral colors. Meals are not included but clients are welcome to bring snacks from home. For those who smoke, short cigarette breaks can be taken in between groups.

Treatment and Staff

Each client must undergo an assessment with a counselor to decide whether this program is a good fit. Depending on the amount and type of substances used, clients may need physical stabilization. A non-medically monitored detox can be combined with treatment. However, if the substance abuse is severe, clients may be referred to a nearby hospital where detox can be done safely under medical guidance.

The program typically runs for eight weeks and is done in the evenings, Monday through Thursday, for three hours each day—the perfect option for someone who has a job, goes to school or has a family. Clients participate in a series of daily group therapy sessions that focus on topics such as communication, relationship conflicts, establishing healthy boundaries, life skills, defense and denial, understanding the addicted mind and trauma. With the small client load, clients can feel safe as they begin to explore emotions, triggers and new ways of coping. In addition to group work, clients receive individual therapy with a counselor once a week. Clients can bring family members in once a week for family group.

This program embraces spirituality, offering guided meditations and breath work so clients can relax and quiet their minds. Another form of spirituality is the 12 steps. Once a week, an on-site AA/NA meeting is held in which both alumni and sober members of the community. This group typically consists of around 25 people, giving clients a chance to meet new faces and understand how this sort of recovery works. While sponsorship is not required, clients can choose this option if they wish.

The team includes a medical director who oversees the program in addition to a handful of counselors and a psychologist. Since a psychiatrist is not on staff, clients who are in need of detox support or medication management can meet with the medical director on an as-needed basis.

In Summary

For those needing structured support without being locked up 24 hours a day, Lighthouse Recovery provides a nice blend of therapy, spirituality and education. While residential care is the only way for some, clients who are looking to maintain a sense of freedom and autonomy may find this program to be a great option.
