Light of Truth CenterLight of Truth Center Review

The Light of Truth Center is a female-only rehabilitation facility that opened in 2000 after CEO Vaile Leonard, a recovering addict, found her sponsee living in horrible conditions and decided to create a more comfortable, clean and dignified place for women to recover. It is dedicated to giving women the skills to not just stay clean, but also thrive in the workforce. The facility, located in the Coppin Heights neighborhood of Baltimore, is known for providing long-term, affordable care.

Accommodations and Food

The Light of Truth Center is a home, a “row-home” to be exact, that houses only five women, who share rooms–two rooms with two beds, and one room with one bed. The facility does not have a gym or any recreational resources on-site, but they do have a television that they use for educational purposes. Prepared meals are served three times a day, with attendance at those meals a mandatory part of the program.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at the Light of Truth Center can last up to six months and revolves around 12-step meetings, individual counseling, group counseling, a program called SHIFT (sharing hope, inspiration, forgiveness and trust), a Women’s Wholeness program that addresses a resident’s hair care, cooking skills, finances, hygiene, physical fitness and professional wardrobe, relapse prevention lectures, case management and group dinner. Residents also must complete daily chores and may work toward their GED. Prospective clients must be 30 days sober upon arrival, although exceptions may be made for dire situations on a case-by-case basis.

A typical day at the Light of Truth Center begins with a 6 am wake-up followed by a 7 am 12-step meeting and various group sessions or educational meetings until lunch. After lunch, residents continue with their busy schedule, possibly with another group session, an individual session or a Women’s Wholeness meeting. Dinner is at 5 pm and may be followed by an evening group on Mondays or Wednesdays.

All staff aside from the residential manager are contracted out, including a mental health counselor and addiction counselors. All groups are held at a sister site, a permanent sober housing solution center nearby.

Extras

Some women who come to the Light of Truth Center may be in need of various hygienic essentials, which this facility provides. These items may include soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and even clothing if needed.

Aftercare is mandatory after completing the Light of Truth Center program. Former residents must attend at least two to three group meetings per week, which tapers off to one meeting per week as they assimilate back into society.

The Light of Truth Center’s long-term housing facility, the Patterson House, has been designed for women in the later stages of recovery. This house provides permanent housing solutions for women who have been sober at least nine months and employed for more than a year.

In Summary

The Light of Truth Center is a no-frills facility that can be very helpful to women in serious need at an unbelievably low cost. Because of the low occupancy, residents can expect an intimate, individualized treatment.
