In 1961, Dr. Ralph Crawshaw, a Portland-based psychiatrist, and his friend, Jack Murdock–then chairman of an Oregon technology company–went on a ski trip and discussed the lack of local social services in their community and how to fix it. Shortly thereafter, the LifeWorks Northwest outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment program was born. Serving clients in Portland, Oregon, LifeWorks NW’s mission is to make recovery available to anyone who wants it.
Treatment and Staff
The first step at LifeWorks is a client assessment, during which trained staff work to develop an individualized treatment plan that builds on client’s strengths and addresses specific needs. Methods of treatment are a mixture of individual therapy and group therapy with an emphasis on CBT. Weekly schedules differ: some clients attend once a week, others attend three times a week. The cost of treatment is low–just $150 for the initial assessment plus $25 for a mandatory urine test. After that, it is $62.50 per group but clients on the Oregon Health Plan are admitted for free.
LifeWorks staff includes a physician, LCSWs and several registered nurses with a range of education and training. The ratio of clients to staff is always fluctuating, but clients are guaranteed personal attention.
After outpatient treatment is completed, clients can attend LifeWorks’ aftercare program. It meets once a week and staff continue to monitor the client’s progress. When both staff and client agree the time is right, a strategy is developed to transition the client out. This usually includes securing community support and creating a regular 12-step meeting schedule.
LifeWorks offers the Portland community a much-needed service–a solid treatment program for substance abuse and mental health. Since they are set up to cater to a broad demographic, their affordable rate and well-trained staff makes it a program that can really make a difference in people’s lives.
