Life’s Journey Review
Life’s Journey Center can be found in the foothills surrounding Palm Springs, California, and offers treatment for any and every addictive issue potential clients could care to name. The rehab was founded in 1996 by Dr. Rose Swearingen, an author and addiction expert with decades of experience, who still serves today as executive director of the facility.
Accommodations and Food
Aside from their wide-ranging treatment options, one big advantage to Life’s Journey is the intimate size of their program that allows for individual care. They have space for 12 residents in rooms both private and semi-private along with a gym, an on-site swimming pool and a yoga/meditation room. The accommodations are peaceful and sunny with plenty of outdoor lounge space and spacious interiors. Bedrooms generally come equipped with two twin beds and varying decorations, though all are pretty plain. The facility also has on-site laundry, and allows residents to bring their iPods and cell phones, though no computers. Homestyle meals are prepared by an on-site chef, and mostly focus on health.
Treatment and Staff
The biggest strength here is the diverse approach to treatment. In addition to treating alcohol and drug addiction, they offer support for PTSD, self-harm, eating and mood disorders and process addictions such as gambling or sex. In general, treatment methods fall mostly within the rubric of the 12 steps, and on-site medically assisted detox is available when necessary.
Though daily schedules vary because treatment is individualized, different offerings include life skills groups, psychological and trauma counseling, individual and group therapy sessions and meditation. Still, the bottom line at Life’s Journey is that with all the different treatment tracks comes a large number of different treatment groups as well.
Various groups include classes on relapse prevention, gender/culturally sensitive process groups, anger management, boundary setting, trust, relationships and so on. Perhaps most interesting among these are food classes (focused on cooking and nutrition) and parenting classes to help previously addicted parents transition back to real life.
Life’s Journey boasts a one-to-one staff-to-client ratio, a staff that includes medical doctors, a psychiatrist, psychologists, counselors, yoga instructors and court advocates for any legal counseling that residents may need. The staff also includes sober coaches, though they are reserved primarily for those in aftercare.
Extras
Recreation at Life’s Journey mostly consists of soaking up the sun poolside—in fact, the center even has aqua aerobics sessions in the pool to bridge treatment and down time. Beyond that, the facility also has a weight training program where trainers take residents through the ups and downs of a good workout. Finally, Life’s Journey offers bilingual services (namely Spanish), a family treatment track and weekly alumni group meetings as an after care option.
In Summary
Overall, Life’s Journey offers a good selection of treatments and amenities for a rehab in its price range—though they are heavy on group sessions, despite the favorable staff-to-client ratio. For those who don’t mind navigating the many different treatment tracks or spending most of their time in small group sessions, a trip to this Palm Springs rehab could fit the recovery bill.
