Life Treatment CentersLife Treatment Centers Review

Since 1972, Life Treatment Centers has provided substance abuse treatment in South Bend, Indiana. Originally, the non-profit organization only provided detox, but throughout the years has expanded to include residential treatment, specifically Jane’s House for women, and outpatient therapy.

Accommodations and Food

The inpatient co-ed detox facility accommodates nine clients in gender-specific sleeping areas. Clients are escorted to the cafeteria, for lunch and dinner. While the fare is basically hospital food, it it is nutritious and dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Snacks like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and bowls of cereal are available any time of the day.

Jane’s House accommodates twelve women, and clients typically share double-occupancy rooms. The women are served lunch and dinner in the dining room, cafeteria-style.

Treatment and Staff

Since this facility provides treatment on a sliding fee scale based on income, prospective clients are required to bring $20, a wage history print out or most recent check stub and TB test results to an initial intake evaluation. After completing the interview, clients are placed in an appropriate treatment protocol. At Life Treatment Centers, smokers are out of luck. The entire organization is non-smoking and adheres to strict rules against tobacco use. Smokers are provided with nicotine patches.

Detox usually lasts between three and seven days. Clients are required to wear scrubs, and no outside medications are permitted. The facility incorporates a cold turkey strategy to help clients wean off alcohol and drugs. There is a local hospital, ready to admit any individuals who exhibit any life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. On-staff physicians monitor clients around the clock. After completing detox, clients are offered the option to transition to inpatient treatment (on-site for women, referrals for men) or outpatient.

At Jane’s House, the average length of stay is between six and eight weeks. Clients participate in an eight-week women’s program that is offered from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Wednesdays and Thursdays at the main building. Life Treatment Centers utilizes several evidence-based modalities, specifically CBT. Weekly treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy (per client’s needs), case management and attendance at 12-step meetings. Group topics include traumatic experiences, self-esteem and self-respect, relationships, abuse, relapse prevention and dual diagnosis support.

The staff includes physicians, case managers and CSACs.

Extras

Aftercare includes attendance at one weekly group session for 16 weeks. The topics parallel those offered in the outpatient program.

United States veterans are provided specialized services that include outpatient therapy and case management. A former veteran facilitates the group sessions.

In Summary

Life Treatment Centers provides comprehensive services for financially challenged clients, particularly women. However, the detox is non-medical, which definitely will not appeal to everyone. Those who require medication-assisted treatment should look elsewhere as well as those with serious medical conditions, since detoxing cold turkey can be a life-threatening ordeal.
