Life Skills Recovery Ranch Review

Life Skills Recovery Ranch is a Utah based residential treatment facility that offers substance abuse programming for men on a real working ranch. The treatment is entirely faith based and employs the 12 steps along with other individualized, client focused care. It includes group counseling, vocational training and therapeutic activities, all of which are highly structured and focused on learning how to live in recovery with the guidance of Christian values.

Accommodations and Food

Clients reside on the Double Dollar Livestock Ranch on over 11,000 acres of land in a large, modern farmhouse. They sleep in dorm style bedrooms in bunk beds and share common areas like the dining room and kitchen. There are usually between five and 15 clients in the program at any given time, and the age range is 18 to 35.

The residence also features a game room, in-house roping room and a living room with TV and movies. Residents have access to both a leather shop and a weight room too.

Professional cooks work on the ranch but throughout their stay in treatment, clients learn how to prepare and serve meals for themselves and others. They receive a food preparation certificate as well.

Treatment and Staff

Men beginning care at Life Skills Recovery Range have to have at least five days of sobriety prior to admission. The facility does not offer detox. The program here is considered extended care so clients often come from a previous 30 day residential stay elsewhere. Regardless, clients can expect to stay in the program for about a year, during which time they work through three phases of treatment.

The first is the intern phases that lasts up to six months. This stage requires clients to learn personal accountability and how to work with others within the ranch atmosphere. The next step is apprentice, which is usually achieved around the seven to nine month mark. This phase in treatment is for those who have shown significant change and are able to exhibit leadership skills and are able to put others before themselves. The final step, mentor, is where clients focus on independent living skills, and have the most privileges, like having a phone, their car, weekend passes and computers.

Clients wake up very early in the morning six days a week where they have the chance to work out, followed by morning devotional and Big Book study. There are daily chores clients have to get done and then have a life skills class, therapeutic activities, and group discussions. The evening commences in either an AA or NA meeting, SMART Recovery or step work. In addition, clients attend a church service every Sunday and regularly volunteer within the community.

The staff of Life Skills Recovery Ranch includes a CMHC, animal specialists, behavioral analysts and residential support techs. At this time, Life Skills Recovery Ranch does not offer dual diagnosis support. Anyone struggling with a co-occurring disorder beyond substance abuse and addiction might need to seek other resources beyond this organization.

Extras

There are over 100 horses on the property along with several other animals, like dogs, cats, goats and chickens. Clients have opportunities for archery and shooting, along with hiking, biking, camping, hunting and fishing. Every Monday clients go into town for sober activities with a staff member.

There is a weekend family program that involves a number of classes and activities along with group counseling.

In Summary

Life Skills Recovery Ranch gives men a chance to reclaim their lives through honest, hard work and a faith based program. They learn how to perform tasks they likely never thought they’d be able to do before and achieve a level of pride that prior to this kind of treatment may not have ever been achieved. It’s a great resource for men who are ready and willing to get sober.
