The Basics

Headquartered out of Boca Raton, Florida, Life of Purpose is a broad behavioral health organization with the goal of providing more flexible treatment solutions to college students struggling with substance abuse. Unlike other programs aimed at adolescents and young adults, Life of Purpose aims to let clients continue pursuing an education while still getting the treatment they need. Though the organization’s flagship programs include sober housing, more flexible outpatient services are available as well. All told, the organization has facilities in Boca Raton, Florida; Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Yardley, Fort Washington and Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. Although detox and medical stabilization services are not included with treatment, those in need can get referrals to these programs as necessary. In general, these programs are available in Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and extended care intensities. IOP generally meets for three nights a week for a total of nine hours.

Treatment includes individual and group sessions with evidence-based counseling practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), though the specifics may vary by practitioner and location. Throughout the program, all participants are also encouraged to attend a 12-step program outside of therapy as well. As mentioned, education is still a major part of the program. To that end, the facility employs academic case managers to help clients arrange their schedules, get financial aid, make admission deadlines and keep up with their studies. Group therapy sessions cover many topics such as life skills, time management, anger management, relapse prevention and trigger identification. While basic dual diagnosis support is available as well, those in need of more intensive care may need to seek additional aid.

The staff at Life of Purpose consists of supervising doctors and psychiatrists, LCSWs, CADCs, case managers and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

Family participation in treatment is a mandatory part of therapy as well. Other bonuses include an adventure therapy program that encourages students to participate in exciting sober activities like surfing, wakeboarding, paintballing and ROPES courses. As mentioned, sober living services are also available. Finally, those who complete a primary care plan can continue on to the organization’s academically-focused aftercare plan as well, which includes check-ins on academics as well as sobriety.

In Summary

In all, Life of Purpose is a relatively unique program aimed at older adolescents and young adults who are trying to get an education. While many rehab programs require clients to stop everything to get the help they need, Life of Purpose’s outpatient programs build academics into treatment to keep participants progressing with their life at a normal rate. Treatment includes dual diagnosis support, 12-step integration and evidence-based counseling as well. While those in need of psychiatric stabilization may need to seek those services first, Life of Purpose’s outpatient programs remain an invaluable resource to those in the area.
