Life Healing Center first opened in 1993, though today it is a subsidiary facility of recovery conglomerate CRC Health. The facility is nestled in the foothills of Sangre de Cristo, New Mexico near Santa Fe. With over 20 years of experience, it offers an inpatient retreat for those suffering from emotional trauma, addiction and mental health disorders. LHC takes a holistic and individualized approach to healing men and women 18 and older; program length varies, but the minimum stay is 30 days.
LHC supports the 12-step philosophy as a means of recovering from addiction, and also treats sex addiction and eating disorders; it’s also a dual diagnosis facility, with treatment available for any co-occurring issues. LHC will work with some insurance companies to help clients get their treatment covered.
Accommodations and Food
Life Healing Center used to be an old-fashioned Boy Scout camp; it can house up to 39 in renovated adobe-style bungalows which are spread out on the ranch-like setting. All rooms are painted in vibrant Hacienda colors and house two clients in single beds; rooms also come furnished with dressers and desks.
Food at LHC focuses on nutrition and developing healthy habits. While the food may not be necessarily gourmet, the cooks will still go out of their way to meet the needs of clients’ dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Upon arrival, each client receives a psychiatric evaluation; once they’re cleared, on-site detox is available to those who need it (with a physician on call and nurses on-site around the clock). After that, residents are assigned a primary therapist who develops individualized treatment plans tailored especially for them. LHC has a six-to-one client-to-therapist ratio, and each resident meets with their therapist once a week; some of the specific treatments offered are CBT, DBT and EMDR. Addiction counselors are also available around the clock for added support.
LHC offers a total of 30 hours of group therapy sessions a week, with each group usually composed of six to eight clients. While the treatment plan may vary depending on recommendations made by the primary therapist, some of the groups include core processing, mindfulness, healing shame, co-dependence, addiction education and psychodrama.
The primary program runs Monday through Friday, where residents begin their day at 6 am with gentle stretching, a trip to the gym or a quiet stroll around the grounds. After breakfast, clients attend a two-hour group facilitated by a master’s level therapist. Next is lunch, after which residents have another rotating afternoon group which is determined by each client’s treatment plan. Finally, in the evenings residents attend a 12-step meeting, which are available both on and off-site.
Although LHC does not endorse any specific religion, it does provide support for individuals interested in deepening their spirituality through meditation, breath work and Somatic Experiencing. After going through primary care, LHC offers either an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) program or helps develop a discharge plan that will help clients increase their odds at their success.
LHC provides transportation to a local gym several times a week at no additional cost, with yoga on-site as well. For those suffering from sex addiction and eating disorders, LHC introduces them to a series of healthy coping and intimacy skills, all done within a gender specific program to maintain safety and integrity.
Life Healing Center is set up to handle everything from addiction, trauma and self-harm to eating disorders, all with traditional therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, LHC is one of the nation’s oldest residential programs for recovery from the emotional and psychological effects of trauma. It continues to maintain a solid reputation with many therapists in the recovery field.
