Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program (LAPP)The Basics

Licking County Alcoholism Prevention Program (LAPP) offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), one-on-one outpatient counseling and a number of other less intensive and topic-specific courses in Newark, Ohio, a city about 30 miles east of Columbus. Programs are designed for men, women and teens. Started in 1968 by Licking County United Way in the former Keller School building, LAPP sees over 1,200 new clients yearly. The Newark location offers full services while Pataskala offers individual counseling for men only. Walk-in intake can be done Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9 am to 2 pm. Those seeking medical-assisted treatment such as Suboxone for opioid abuse must attend outreach before doing a formal assessment. LAPP accepts both court-ordered and voluntary clients.

Treatment and Staff

For IOP and regular outpatient, LAPP offers individualized treatment using Stage Wise Treatment and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Stage Wise counseling emphasizes personal values, beliefs, goals and life experiences to effect change. IOP meets four days a week from 5 pm to 8 pm while outpatient appointments are available from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday (based on counselors’ availability).

For men not in need of IOP, counselors and clients can discuss a range of other themed courses designed to offer less intensive outpatient counseling. Discovery is a beginners group focusing on the causes and effects of substance abuse, where clients develop awareness of the problems caused by addiction and take personal responsibility for addressing them. The Mens Recovery Program covers needs and goals formulated in Discovery and teaches clients how to manage their cravings. The Positive Direction Series encourages lifestyle changes and networking sobriety resources. Recovery Maintenance/Relapse Prevention gives support to men struggling to maintain abstinence once Men’s Recovery has ended. Road to Recovery Group examines the connections between  criminal behavior and substance abuse. For co-occurring disorders, LAPP offers Integrated Recovery.

These courses last a month and meet fewer than four times a week. Clients can take only one course at a time because schedules often overlap, though they can return to take as many of them as they would like.

For women, there’s a gender-specific IOP called Women’s Addiction Recovery where mental health, trauma, arrest, employment, health and relationship issues are discussed. For less intensive treatment, LAPP offers a series of courses that women can take instead. The Contemplation Group brings awareness and self-assessment about abuse and treatment. The Women’s Action Group is for those not as severely impacted by substance abuse as those in IOP and who have already begun to take responsibility for recovery. Anger Management teaches clients how to control their emotions, Family Systems Group shows how substance abuse effects loved ones and The Trauma Informed Group (Love of Letting Go) explores trauma and grief. These are also all month-long courses, meeting several times a week.

LAPP offers three programs serving adolescents. Along with individualized counseling, teens can attend an Adolescent AOD Education Group, a basic one-time substance abuse presentation meeting for four to six hours, designed for ages 11 to 19. Also available is Teen Intervention, for ages 11 to 19, designed to prevent drug experimentation from turning into full dependence. Lastly, Teens Need Treatment (TNT) employs the Matrix Model, offering early recovery skills, relapse prevention and family education for 11-to-19 year-olds with more serious drug abuse issues. TNT is the most intensive program of the three.

LAPP’s official outpatient track is where only minimal individual therapy is necessary. Sessions can be half an hour to an hour, once a week or bi-weekly. Outpatient care at LAPP is generally the final phase of treatment before an individual is ready to end formal care and return to daily living with only community support as the basis of their sobriety.

The staff at LAPP is made up of doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, counselors and case managers, with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-six. AA and NA meetings can be attended outside of treatment and services.

Extras

Before starting treatment, potential clients can attend LAPP’s outreach program that explains how their programs work and identifies goals. This is an ongoing, free orientation class for anyone who would like more information about LAPP’s treatment programs.

LAPP offers drug-free workplace training, community outreach and intervention, inmate education for those incarcerated in Licking County, youth education and DUI education.

The Newark location’s hours are Monday through Thursday 8 am to 8 pm and 8 am to 2 pm on Friday, with other times available by appointment. Pataskala has the same hours, though Friday is by appointment only.

In Summary

LAPP provides low-cost, gender-specific IOP and outpatient alcohol and substance abuse services to thousands of men, women and teens in the Licking County area. Their adult programs are gender-specific and allow for highly-structured or more flexible treatment, depending on a person’s needs and goals.
