Liberty House Recovery Center Review

Liberty House of Lexington, Kentucky is a men’s only recovery home that offers long-term treatment based on the 12 steps. Treatment plans can last up to a year and include an individualized program and aftercare plan along with a variety of life skills and educational groups on a daily basis. Liberty House was founded by Larry Luttrell in 1990 after he himself achieved sobriety in 1988, of which he gives credit to having a structured treatment program that took place in a sober house. In addition to Liberty House, Luttrell has opened three other facilities.

Accommodations and Food

Liberty House is a luxurious 16-bed, two-story estate. It is spacious and beautiful, with hardwood floors throughout and elegant decor with vintage furnishings. The double and triple-occupancy bedrooms have queen or full sized beds with dressers and desks. The living room and game room have big screen TVs with on demand movies, cable and Internet. The full sized kitchen has marble countertops with a breakfast bar, dining room with long, oak table, and front sitting room that includes a wood burning fireplace makes the facility feel more like a vacation lodge rather than a sober living house.

There are three meals a day that are prepared on site from a set menu. Residents can also buy and prepare their own food if they wish.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment programs are individualized and designed to give each of the men a renewed sense of self-worth and life goals. There are programs for 30, 60 and 90 days, though clients can stay at the facility for up to a year. Programming is mainly group based, and every client is also required to attend at least one 12-step meeting every day.

Staff focuses on each client and regularly pull guys aside for some one on one attention to discuss how the individual is feeling and progressing in the house. These are less of a therapeutic meeting, but rather an encouraging coaching from a staff member who has experienced similar things and offers advice and guidance.

Different types of groups are comprised of peers, newcomers, senior residents and even family. Family involvement is an integral part of Liberty House’s program, and during weekly visits, clients and family members are invited to sit down with a staff member to talk over experiences and voice concerns. Additionally, relapse prevention, coping skills, life skills, responsibility, accountability, integrity, honesty and self respect are common topics of discussion within group and individual settings.

The staff includes the founder and house manager, a former resident and success story of Liberty House, along with other resident staff and peer support volunteers. If needed, there are consulting mental health professionals that work with Liberty House who can offer dual diagnosis support or individual therapy.

Extras

The sprawling grounds contain a waterfall pool, basketball and tennis court, and workout space with weights and machines. There is also a fishing pond. Clients frequently go out on sober excursions, like camping trips, music and movie nights.

In Summary

The Liberty House is not a clinical setting. Rather it’s a 12-step based support system that can offer more therapeutic options. Treatment mainly focuses on peer support and guidance. For men seeking a comfortable, affordable sober living and structured recovery program, this is a good choice.
