Liberty Bay Recovery Center is a residential treatment facility in Portland, Maine. Using the therapeutic community approach, Liberty Bay has 90-day treatment plans, after which clients can choose to extend their care in Liberty Bay’s sober living residences. While Liberty Bay opened its doors in 2014, its founders, Nathan and Jasmine Cermlj, have worked for several years prior in the recovery industry and been in recovery themselves since 2005. Treatment has a 12-step framework supplemented by outdoor recreational therapy.
Accommodations and Food
Clients occupy residences on the Liberty Bay campus, and the community treats up to 38 residents at a time. Clients have roommates and are encouraged to bring photos and other personal items to help them feel at home. There are common areas with TVs and games for recreation. Clients are not permitted any electronics except mp3 players that cannot connect to the Internet.
As part of their life skills training, clients are responsible for their own food preparation and learn to cook and create meal plans. The Liberty Bay staff take them shopping once a week for groceries.
Treatment and Staff
Clients with opiate addiction may begin Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone, and usually have a six to seven day stabilization period before entering full-time treatment. Clients detoxing from painkillers and alcohol may be referred to a nearby affiliated medical facility for detox.
Clients start their days at 7 am with chores and breakfast and have meditation at 8 am. Group therapy is from 9 am to 3 pm (with a lunch break) and then clients have a block of time for treatment homework. At 5 pm, they usually have physical recreation and then dinner. At 7 pm they are taken to off-site 12-step meetings and then have free time until lights out at 10 pm. Clients also have individual therapy at least once a week.
The counseling team are, at minimum, CADCs and use CBT and DBT in treatment groups. Liberty Bay also has a medical doctor on staff who specializes in addiction medicine. The program isn’t licensed for primary mental health treatment but co-occurring disorders are addressed in therapy and clients in need of dual diagnosis support can be transported to treatment at a nearby mental health clinic.
On Fridays, clients spend the afternoons in outdoor recreational therapy (weather permitting) like hiking and snow-shoeing.
Clients have yoga classes twice each week and are transported to a nearby gym for additional recreation. On weekends, they periodically take beach or camping trips.
Every six weeks, Liberty Bay hosts a family weekend where clients’ loved ones can come to the campus for workshops, support groups and visiting.
The treatment team creates an aftercare plan with each client that may include peer support meetings, on-going individual therapy or an outpatient program. Residents can also apply to for spots in Liberty Bay’s sober living residences.
Liberty Bay Recovery Center creates a supportive and stable therapeutic community that incorporates the 12-step framework, life skills training and outdoor physical recreation. Clients receive comprehensive addiction treatment while also learning the skills to live cooperatively and form lasting bonds with other residents.
