Marina del Rey CaliforniaThe Basics

Located in the Southern California beach community of Marina Del Rey near Los Angeles, Lee FitzGerald is a CADC and a Board Registered Interventionist Level I (BRI-I) interventionist. She received her counseling certificate from UCLA after beginning her career in marketing. FitzGerald also serves on the board of the Association of Intervention Specialists and appeared on season eight of A&E’s television show Intervention.

The Background

FitzGerald has been working in the recovery community for nearly fifteen years. After achieving sobriety, she originally planned to use her marketing background to open a bed and breakfast in Australia when a friend suggested she apply for a marketing position at Promises treatment center in Malibu. For nearly a decade she served as Executive Director of Aftercare and Outreach Services for Promises Treatment Centers, a national network of substance abuse treatment facilities.

In addition to conducting interventions, FitzGerald currently serves at the Executive Director Western Region and International Development for the non-profit Caron Treatment Centers. FitzGerald believes that being of service is foundational to her success in recovery and in 2006 she founded Dristi Nepal, a non-profit drop-in center in Kathmandu, Nepal for substance abusing women to receive support and recovery information.

The Approach

FitzGerald employs The Johnson Model of interventions, an approach that involves direct confrontation of the addict after considerable interviews and preparation with his or her caregivers. FitzGerald’s method to guiding clients to sobriety emphasizes eliminating the negative effects of addictive behavior by shifting focus to the positive elements of each individual’s personality. Success of the intervention relies upon a group of individuals—typically the family and loved ones—who support the recovery process and reinforce these positive attributes.

FitzGerald’s methods are particularly effective for addicts whose caregivers are very involved in their lives. It also works for those with dual diagnosis as it can be effective with addicts who may not be capable of rational thought due to a mental health diagnosis.

In addition to Promises and Caron, FitzGerald recommends McLean Hospitals, Malibu Sober Living and Transcend Recovery Community. She is also a strong supporter of the 12-step framework and encourages clients to find fellowship and peer-support in the 12-step community.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Lee FitzGerald has been working with established recovery centers for a decade. Using proven methods of intervention to establish support and trust with the addict, she prides herself on conducting interventions that are tailored to each addict’s personality and unique situation. With an extensive background working in treatment centers, FitzGerald uses her experience in the trenches of recovery to provide families reliable case-management services and to help them create a treatment plan for themselves to sustain lasting recovery.
