The Basics

LEAD Recovery Center offers a co-ed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in addition to a sober living program for young men in Costa Mesa, California. The acronym LEAD stands for “Landing, Exploration, Action and Discovery,” and both programs seek to combine “a strong emphasis on clinical treatment, life skills mastery, and immersive experiential learning.”

Founded over 25 years ago, the current clinical director is Rick Zumwalt—a MS and PhD candidate with an extensive background in athletic coaching and academia. Zumwalt’s background informs LEAD’s emphasis on team-building, accountability and life-long learning. Located just 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Costa Mesa is close to beaches, hiking and several colleges and universities.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial assessment, clients are admitted to the IOP and typically begin with a minimum three-month commitment (longer depending upon individual goals). Clients participate in approximately 20 hours of treatment per week with two individual sessions, one family therapy session and a customized assortment of therapeutic (anger management), life skills (transportation, career and hobby planning, general communication and hygiene) and educational groups that range in size depending on the group emphasis and curriculum. All sessions are available during the day and at night to accommodate work, school and life commitments.

Groups seldom exceed 20 participants and have two staff leaders with a 10-to-one staff-to-client ratio. The group meetings are not 12-step oriented, though LEAD points clients to AA/NA meetings in the community for additional support.

LEAD offers dual diagnosis support and uses a combination of techniques including CBT, DBT, Immersive Natural Learning, Social Cognitive Therapy, and neurofeedback. The staff include MFTs, CSACs, LADCs and Certified Life Coaches. There is an RN on staff and a visiting psychiatrist who is also on-call. There are several medical facilities in the area to which LEAD can refer clients for detox and other medical interventions.

As clients progress through their treatment plan, LEAD emphasizes the importance of education and meaningful work in their recovery. To those ends, it maintains relationships with several area learning institutions and pays special attention to helping each client craft a learning or employment plan that will give them a sense of steady growth and accomplishment.

Extras

LEAD believes that healing the family dynamic is central to recovery. On-site family groups are held on Monday and Tuesday nights, and additionally families and loved ones are encouraged to attend a well-regarded community group Friday nights at a local hospital.

After a client completes the IOP, they and their families are encouraged to continue their participation and attend family groups as alumni to reinforce their recovery and support others in the process.

LEAD is affiliated with Hired Power, a network of resources for addiction sufferers—including interventionists, doctors, and other helping professionals—who can be called on to meet the needs of clients and their families in every stage of recovery.

In the interest of continuing a path of recovery, young men who have completed IOP can transition into LEAD’s four-phase, highly structured residential sober living program.

In Summary

With nearly three decades of experience, LEAD methods are well-tested and ever-evolving to incorporate the newest research in treatment and education. LEAD’s life skills training comprises the heart of treatment, and founder Zumwalt has authored a 15-step Life Skills assessment and course that’s implemented by the certified life coaches on LEAD’s staff.

With the help of LEAD’s staff, women and men of all ages can transition into other local sober living and transitional programs or gradually step down from treatment as they experience continued success. LEAD’s staff is dedicated to planting seeds of self-sufficiency and confidence and making sure clients feel supported in their aftercare upon leaving LEAD’s programs.
