sober livings south san francisco californiaThe Basics

Based in California’s Bay Area, The Latino Commission is a multi-faceted behavioral health organization that provides culturally-sensitive treatment for addiction. Aside from residential and outpatient programs, it also runs a co-ed sober living home in South San Francisco for those who are further along in the recovery process.

Accommodations and Amenities

The sober living home is situated in a quiet neighborhood, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco and can accommodate up to 22 clients at a time—generally about two-thirds men and one-third women. Rooms are shared between two same-sex clients and come equipped with dressers and shared closet space. Each client is expected to buy their own groceries and prepare their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

Though primarily geared for the Latin community of for the Bay Area,  attendance is open to anyone in need. While the rules of the home are relatively laid back, residents are required to stay sober and employed, enrolled in school or involved in volunteer work, in addition to attending 12-step meetings. Regular and random drug testing is conducted. Residents must also attend weekly individual therapy sessions through the outpatient clinic so that recovery progress can be monitored.

While there are house managers who live on-site and staff may visit intermittently through out the day, residents are expected to manage their own lives— including appointments and medications. The average stay is approximately six months, though some residents stay as long as a year.

Extras

The Latino Commission holds contracts with the city of San Francisco and other local government agencies so that clients may enroll in its programs at a discounted rate. Other services include community outreach programs for pregnancy prevention and youth development for teens.

In Summary

In all, The Latino Commission Sober Living provides a peer-driven and culturally-sensitive transitional living environment. With an emphasis on social re-integration and independence, clients learn to function as sober members of society as they build their sober network for ongoing and long-term support. While accommodations are nothing fancy, those looking for an affordable and safe transition to independent living, The Latino Commission Sober Living is a solid option for its target demographic.
