The Basics

Located in the LA neighborhood of Mar Vista, California, The Last House operates two sober living homes for men, typically between the ages of 20 and 34. Solidarity and unity are emphasized at The Last House and clients do many activities together, including going to 12-step meetings, cooking and performing household chores. In keeping with the spirit of camaraderie, newcomers are assigned a house “big brother” who provides guidance and support.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Mar Vista East house is located in close proximity to the beach in Marina del Rey while Mar Vista West, which is only a few blocks away, is near Santa Monica College and UCLA. Each house accommodates 14 clients who are housed in furnished double-occupancy or single rooms, all at the same cost. The Last House locations are home to three pooches that provide canine companionship.

The kitchen is fully stocked with food. Breakfast is served and includes coffee, fresh fruit, and orange juice. Residents are taught cooking skills and they take turns preparing dinner for the entire household. At The Last House, clients break bread together, which also strengthens their bonds. The homes include around the clock staff, who provide support at all hours. Each house has a minivan, which is used to provide transportation to outpatient rehabs, 12-step meetings, court appointments and other outings.

Rules and Regulations

A commitment to a 90-day minimum length of stay is required, but most clients stay between nine months and a year. While clients are allowed to attend other recovery support groups, including SMART Recovery, The Last House is immersed in the 12-steps and clients are typically very involved with the AA/NA fellowship. On a weekly basis, some residents attend two daily AA/NA meetings while others go to seven meetings, but the minimum requirement is three. Clients are also strongly encouraged to develop active relationships with mentors or sponsors, and work on their steps. Other weekly obligations include preparation of three household dinners, participation in chores, and attendance at the house meeting and partaking in daily morning meditation.

At The Last House, clients are usually up and ready to start their day by eight am, and are productive usually until eight pm. Daily activities vary per client and include attendance at outpatient treatment, working or pursuing an academic education.

At The Last House, random drug testing is conducted, and a zero policy is enforced. Relapsed clients are immediately dismissed from the premises. Court advocacy services are provided for clients as needed. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Clients who are at a meeting that runs past curfew are granted leeway, provided that they contact staff ahead of time.

Extras

Besides housing, other services provided by The Last House include life skills coaching, cooking know-how, a weekly yoga class and an annual ski trip.

The Last House is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.

In Summary

The Last House is an excellent supportive environment for men in recovery. For clients who are not that interested in opening up a Big Book, this sober living home may not be the right fit, but for those yearning to be part of a brotherhood, and who want to work on their life skills while completing their steps, The Last House is the perfect spot.
