Vancouver British ColumbiaLast Door Recovery Centre Review

Founded in 1984, Last Door is a long-term residential substance abuse treatment facility for men and youth located just outside Vancouver, Canada. The programming is based on the social model, offering evidence-based treatment modalities and support for clients with co-occurring disorders. Treatment at Last Door includes group and individual therapy, exercise and holistic options.

Accommodations and Food

The residence offers a home-like feel with old school charm in a quiet neighborhood in New Westminster. The facilities are spacious and open, housing men and youths (male, ages 13-18) from all walks of life and economic backgrounds. There are both single and double occupancy rooms available, fully furnished with double beds, dressers, desks and closet space. Programs take place on the premises that includes classrooms and offices, or in one of the large living rooms with leather couches and chairs and a mounted big screen TV. There are several shared bathrooms throughout the facility, some that are full with showers and tubs, and some are half baths.

No one can ever claim to go hungry at Last Door as the chef prepares every meal from fresh and local ingredients with not much attention to portion control. Meals include steak and potatoes, locally caught salmon and barbecued ribs as a few examples.

Treatment and Staff

The programs are based on the social model and include elements of the 12-steps. There is no formal religious element to the programs, but it’s emphasized that there is no discrimination regardless of what the client’s spiritual background is. A typical day incorporates group therapy with recreational activities, written assignments and outside NA meetings. There are also weekly CBT-based individual therapy sessions and holistic approaches, like acupuncture.

The evidence based methods and psychoeducational classes aim to assist clients in making healthier decisions and making the clients accountable for themselves. For clients who come to the facility with a dual diagnosis, or if during their stay it’s discovered that a co-occurring disorder is prevalent, there are medication management services and follow up appointments with the facilities psychiatrist or associated medical staff. The internationally accredited and multi-disciplinary staff includes CADCs, LCSWs, psychiatrists, psychologists, caseworkers, yoga and meditations specialists and peer counselors.

Extras

There is an on-site gym with cardio machines and weights. Recreational activities and outings are a weekly occurrence and include facility softball and dodgeball games, or fishing and camping trips. There is a local ice rink that the facility rents out every week for clients to play hockey and they also have access to an Olympic sized swimming pool. There are several instructors who lead fitness classes like martial arts and yoga at the facility, and excursions to professional sports, paintballing, movie nights or golfing happen frequently.

There is an in-depth family program that includes parenting groups and couples therapy. Though there aren’t any detox services offered at the facility there are referrals and resources offered to clients who need to go through the detox process prior to admission. Specialty programs include gambling; Internet and sex addiction, and online counseling services are also available.

In Summary

The most unique aspect to this facility is the emphasis on having fun and laughing in sobriety. There is a real world approach to treatment at this facility that isn’t a common occurrence in many other programs, and aims to serve the client by meeting them exactly where they are and help them become the person they want to be.
