lassenThe Basics

Lassen County Behavioral Health offers outpatient treatment for residents struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. With two locations in the small former mining town of Susanville, the facility provides both individual and group therapy for residents as well as dual diagnosis care.

Treatment and Staff

For individuals under 21 years of age, an appointment with a therapist is required to assess what kind of care is needed. For adults over 21, intakes are done on a walk-in basis and involve clients meeting with a case manager and agreeing on the level of care and services needed.

Individual therapy is offered on an as-needed basis and the length of a session depends on the client; in an unusual twist, Lassen County charges clients without insurance by the minute. Some clients attend weekly therapy while others choose to have bi-weekly sessions. A psychiatrist is available to prescribe medication if required via TeleMed, an online medical service similar to Skype that serves over 45,000 healthcare providers.

Among the different groups is one for women only that helps females cope with a range of issues from anger to substance abuse. The groups continue to be open to clients even after they stop attending the outpatient program.

12-step meetings are not a part of the program, though some 12-step programs rent out space for meetings at the Hospital Lane location after work hours and Lassen County therapists support clients seeking 12 step and other self-help recovery groups.

At Lassen County Behavioral Health’s main location on Hospital Lane, there are eight licensed therapists in residence; at the Chestnut Street location just one mile away are six licensed therapists. The organization also has case managers at each location to help meet client needs. Both locations handle mental health issues, but Chestnut Street alone serves clients with substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. Each therapist at any given time may have up to 80 clients.

Extras

For individuals who require greater supervision, Lassen County Behavioral Health can provide references to other programs in the area.

In Summary

Lassen County Behavioral Health is a small but effective organization that works to bring mental health and substance abuse treatment to those in need. The outpatient program is tailored to each client and adult clients especially have a say in the pace and duration of treatment. Anyone needing a more structured or strict program may need to look elsewhere.
