The LandingThe Landing Review

The Landing of Newport Beach lives up to its name—it is literally situated right on the sand, with ceiling-high picture windows that open up to Pacific sunsets. Part of the Sober Living by the Sea network (owned in turn by recovery conglomerate CRC Health), this all-male facility houses six to ten men at a time.

Accommodations and Food

The Landing is basically a beach house, but what a beach house it really is. Aside from the aforementioned ocean views, it comes equipped with custom granite counter tops, high ceilings and a general sense of elegance. If anything feels somewhat light on amenities, it’s the bedrooms: neither the beds nor the rooms themselves are enormous, and most residents have roommates. Still, one point of pride at The Landing is that its healthy gourmet cuisine can be tailored to anyone’s nutritional needs.

Treatment and Standing

Upon admission, clients are evaluated for co-occurring disorders to ensure its treatment programs are comprehensive and individualized. After detox (including Subutex and Suboxone for opiate addicts), clients participate in a range of evidence-based treatments including CBT, trauma informed care, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and contingency management. In addition, educational lectures and process groups tackle topics like conflict resolution, anger and stress management and other life skills. There is also a three-day family program once a month; treatment plans can be adjusted week by week as recovery progresses.

The Landing subscribes to the disease model of addiction and requires daily attendance at 12-step meetings, which mostly take place off-site after dinner. Twelve-step is seen as an essential supplement to the scientifically-tested treatment modules provided by the clinical staff. But the overall vibe at The Landing is very laid back, and residents are encouraged to seek a vein of spirituality that works for them.

The Landing prides itself on its one-to-one staff-to-client ratio. Almost the entire staff is in recovery

Extras

Given the easy access to surf and sand, it’s no surprise there is a strong emphasis on fitness at The Landing. Residents have plenty of time for beach volleyball, surfing, sailing and kayaking as well gym workouts three times a week that alternate with Tai-Chi sessions. Other exercise options include hiking, a ropes course, kung-fu and golf. If the waves aren’t relaxing enough, there’s acupuncture, hypnotherapy, massages, yoga and daily meditation. Art and music therapy are available once a week as well.

In Summary

After 30 to 90 days of living at The Landing, men are guided into a step-down process of continuing care, including intensive outpatient treatment or a transfer to an affiliated sober living. For male addicts who are seeking an intimate, gender-segregated treatment experience with heavy doses of beach breeze and 12-step meetings, The Landing has a lot to offer.
