Lakes Counseling CenterThe Basics

Lakes Counseling Center is a privately owned outpatient treatment facility in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Lakes was founded in 1989 by two licensed addiction counselors, who continue to own and run it today. Most clients at Lakes are from the surrounding area, though the facility does serve some clients from North Dakota as well with options including initial consultations and treatment programs for adults, adolescents and family members.

Treatment and Staff

Lakes is a state-regulated program. The process at Lakes begins with an assessment in which counselors determine each client’s needs. If the staff decides that Lakes’ outpatient program would be a good fit, clients are then recommended for intake. For those deemed in need of inpatient care, Lakes can recommend an outside program. Although Lakes does not offer detox, referrals to a local hospital can be made when necessary.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) lasts 27 sessions, with clients required to attend three group therapy sessions and one individual meeting a week. Each group lasts three hours and takes place on weekday evenings. In group,  staff members educate clients on addiction issues and on the basics of 12-step. The facility has three licensed drug counselors and usually around 10 to a group (with a maximum 15) in the adult program; the adolescent program has no more than eight to a group.

As Lakes is 12-step based, clients must complete up to Step Five before being discharged. The facility also uses CBT, reality therapy and motivational techniques to encourage clients to both complete the program and better their lives. For court-ordered clients, the program employs behavior contracts to help keep everyone on track.

Although Lakes does not offer dual diagnosis support nor do they have a doctor on-site, their facility is next door to Lakeland Mental Health Center where clients with co-occurring mental health disorders can get the help they need.

Lakes’ adolescent program is almost identical to the adult program, save for minor differences in the educational aspect and increased family integration as part of each client’s treatment. Counselors in the adolescent track present the same material as in the adult one, though they also use techniques such as singing, creating artwork and fun worksheets to get the material across. Family members are encouraged to join in the last hour of each group therapy session in the adolescent program.

Extras

For those who have completed IOP, Lakes offers free aftercare and relapse prevention, with meetings two times a week for two hours each. Clients attending relapse prevention classes are strongly encouraged to get involved with local AA and NA groups as well. The program runs for 10 to 12 weeks, though they can be shortened or extended depending on a client’s outside involvement in AA or NA.

Lakes offers a family program for adults in which family members meet with counselor and client in a private environment, namely the counselor’s office. Although only one of these meetings is required for the entire session, the program can recommend more of them if need be.

In Summary

In all, Lakes Counseling Center is a great fit for clients living in the Detroit Lakes area who are suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, but without any complicating mental health disorders. The facility features support for both adults, adolescents and family members, and is traditionally AA-based—for those unopposed to a traditional and cost-effective approach, Lakes Counseling is worth considering.
