The Lakehouse Recovery Center dreamstimeLakehouse Recovery Center Review

Opened in 2005, The Lakehouse Recovery Center offers a boutique-style, individualized treatment program that covers everything from detox to sober living. They combine innovative techniques, experiential therapies and holistic treatment with tried and true traditions like 12-step meetings. With a passionate staff and exceptional lakefront living environment, The Lakehouse Recovery Center aims to make treatment an experience, rather than just a stint in rehab.

Accommodations and Food

Located on Lake Sherwood in Westlake Village, California, a  suburb northwest of Los Angeles, The Lakehouse Recovery Center treats only six clients at a time. All of the rooms are spacious and private, uniquely decorated and equipped with queen-sized beds. The living areas have hardwood floors and art on the walls. There’s a fireplace, billiards and Ping Pong tables and a scenic porch full of chaise lounge chairs facing the lake.

Two in-house chefs, one of whom is a nutritionist, prepare all meals, using healthy and organic ingredients. Because the program is so small in size, accommodating dietary requests is not usually a problem.

Treatment and Staff

Clients stay in residential treatment at The Lakehouse Recovery Center anywhere from 28 days up to three months. The first stage of treatment is known as Stabilization and Evaluation, and usually involves detox. There is no set length of time for the detox phase, but clients are supervised by a medical team and then gradually transitioned into residential treatment. Whether detox is a necessary step or not, clients are subjected to a very thorough initial assessment. This includes medical, psychiatric and psychotherapeutic evaluations, at which stage co-occurring disorders are identified and treated. Dual diagnosis clients are welcome as The Lakehouse Recovery Center also has full access to psychiatric services in the area. The goal is to evaluate every detail of the client’s physical and mental being in order to ensure the most effective approach to his or her recovery.

The bulk of recovery happens in the second stage, known as Case Management and Intensive Treatment. What makes the treatment at The Lakehouse Recovery Center really stand out is the combination of therapeutic modalities. Some of the key recovery techniques implemented are EMDR, DBT, neurofeedback and neuroplasticity. These modalities are combined with extensive experiential and adventure therapies in addition to the traditions of the 12 steps. While The Lakehouse Recovery Center does introduce clients to 12-step principles, and although meetings are encouraged and even held on-site at the facility, it is not a required part of treatment for clients to attend.

Residents begin their days by 8 am. They are expected to clean their rooms before a 9 am breakfast and meditation. After breakfast, clients participate in either group or individual therapy or a combination of both followed by lunch, then an AA meeting. Clinical appointments, individual and group therapy fill the afternoon, mainly at Vantage Point Recovery, The Lakehouse Recovery Center’s nearby outpatient facility. These sessions are followed by free time and/or recreational activity before dinner. After dinner, there is usually a guest speaker, addiction expert panel or more recreational group activities. The goal of the schedule is to find an appropriate balance of group and individual support.

The current CEO of The Lakehouse Recovery Center is Stuart Brinbaum, formerly a comedy writer in Los Angeles and now an active leader in the Southern California recovery community. The clinical staff is certainly diverse in comparison to the standard rehab, with three therapists, one art therapist, a life coach, a pranic healer, an applied psychology coach, a mindful living specialist, three doctors and eight patient technicians. Most of the staff is accessible to clients around the clock.

Extras

One of the greatest perks for clients who are wary of leaving their animals while in treatment or struggling to find care for them is that The Lakehouse Recovery Center allows its clients to bring their pets with them, understanding how therapeutic this relationship can be. Other alternative therapies offered are art, yoga, equine therapy and, big bonus points for a Southern California facility, surf therapy. Treatment also includes a free gym membership at nearby Spectrum Club in Thousand Oaks. Clients enjoy field trips to nearby destinations, fishing, boating, hiking, rock climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and horseback riding. All of these electives are included in the cost of treatment, as is the EMDR therapy.

Although there is not a structured family program, family sessions can be arranged upon client arrival at The Lakehouse Recovery Center. As part of a continuing step-down in treatment, residential clients have the options of enrolling in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or transferring to one of the approved sober living facilities, or both. The IOP program takes place at Vantage Point Recovery.

In Summary

The Lakehouse Recovery Center offers advanced, unique and individualized care in a beautiful lakefront facility. Clients learn how to have fun in sobriety as part of an innovative treatment protocol that includes evidence-based practices, experiential and adventure therapies. With only six people in residence at a time, dual diagnosis support and a continuum of care available for the first year of sobriety, The Lakehouse Recovery Center seems like an excellent place to recover in Southern California.
