Lake Geauga Recovery CentersLake Geauga Recovery Centers Review

Created in 1971, Lake Geauga Recovery Centers is a private nonprofit agency in the quiet Cleveland suburb of Painesville, Ohio. This organization serves the counties of Lake and Geauga, offering a wide range of services for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders; both residential and outpatient services are available. Through the 12 steps, group and individual therapy, and education, they hope to make long-term sobriety and an improved quality of life possible.

Accommodations and Food

Lake Geauga Recovery Centers operates two long-term, non-medical residential facilities in Painesville. The Lake House, an 11-bed set up for men, and the Oak House, with 16 beds for women, provide homey atmospheres for recovery. Nicely-sized bedrooms are shared by two clients and feature twin beds and dressers. The homes also include large kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms with TVs and therapy rooms. Smoking is permitted outside during break times. For fitness, clients are given a membership to visit the local YMCA several times a week. A weight room and guided yoga classes are available and, when the weather permits, supervised walks are also an option.

Cooking meals is a required part of this program. Clients are given an allowance each week and taken on supervised grocery trips. Back in the comfort of their kitchens, meals can be made as a group or solo effort. The idea is that, by requiring clients to budget and prepare their food on a daily basis, important life skills are learned.

Treatment and Staff

Lake Geauga Recovery Centers offers gender-specific, long-term residential programs, as well as ambulatory detox and outpatient services. All clients must undergo an initial intake assessment to determine which program is the best fit. All group sizes are kept small, between 10 and 15, to provide ample opportunity for individualized attention.

The ambulatory detox is a non-narcotic management of opiate withdrawal, offering an alternative to Suboxone and similar medications. An assessment is required before beginning this process. The goal is for clients to begin therapy during detox and continue after it is completed.

The residential programs are meant to provide training for sober, healthy living. The 90-day (or more) treatment plans use education, recreation, therapy and 12-step work to help residents from every angle. The weekly schedule includes a minimum of 12 hours of group therapy, at least one hour of individual therapy, fitness time at the YMCA, cooking, grocery shopping, 12-step meetings and family therapy. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, communication, employment, family dynamics, trauma, the 12 steps, nutrition and anger management. Clients venture into the community for three AA/NA meetings per week.

In addition to offering traditional residential treatment, Lake Geauga Recovery Centers operates a home called Naveah Ridge for 12 pregnant women and women with children under the age of five. Located in Mentor, Ohio, this facility offers structured living with child care services, parenting education, pre-natal care, outpatient treatment, transportation, workforce preparation and integration into the 12-step community. The length of time spent in this program depends on the individual’s needs.

The outpatient program offers weekly group therapy, individual therapy and family group. Group topics are similar to those discussed in the residential program. Groups are offered during the days and evenings. The length of time spent in treatment is determined on an individual basis.

The staff includes Master’s-level social workers, certified counselors and licensed rehab technicians.

Extras

Lake Geauga Recovery Centers provides a family program that gives loved ones an opportunity to participate in the recovery process through family therapy and family group night. This group discusses topics such as codependency, boundaries and healthy communication. Drug testing is provided as part of the outpatient program.

In addition to treating substance abuse, the rehab also has outpatient programs for gambling addictions.

In Summary

Lake Geauga Recovery Centers offers affordable, solid treatment for substance abuse issues. Using the 12 steps and therapy in a structured, safe environment, clients can begin to rebuild their self-esteem and families. Both the residential and outpatient programs teach clients the necessary tools to begin a healthy,  sober way of life.
