Lahey Health Behavioral Services OutpatientThe Basics

Lahey Behavioral Health Services has a substance abuse and mental health treatment history spanning over 50 years. Formerly known as Northeast Behavioral Health, Lahey provides services for residents of the greater Boston, North Shore and Merrimack Valley, in Massachusetts. Offering a continuum of care that spans detox, inpatient, outpatient, prevention and education, adult and adolescent clients find targeted treatment. The outpatient services include Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs that use Vivitrol and Methadone to prevent relapse of opiate and alcohol dependence.

Treatment and Staff

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is recommended for clients that require regular treatment, while still being able to fulfill school, work or parenting responsibilities. After assessment, clients are provided individualized treatment plans, with goals, program length and treatment modalities suggested.

The program meets five days a week, with groups lasting from 9 am to 3 pm. The days are structured to provide education and relapse prevention through group therapy, with individual therapy weekly. These sessions are separated by gender and treatment focus. Couples and family counseling is available, with loved ones encouraged to participate in education sessions. Clients with co-occurring disorders are treated with medication where appropriate, as well as targeted mental health counseling. Introductions are made to 12-step meetings, with attendance suggested. All clients receive random drug testing and assistance with referrals to additional services. Those with court orders for substance-related charges will find a variety of programs that meet legal requirements.

The MAT programs are offered to clients that struggle with alcohol and opioid dependency. Both short- and long-term options are available. The Vivitrol program includes monthly medication with group and individual counseling. Licensed mental health counselors facilitate counseling sessions, while nurses prescribe and dispense medication. The Methadone maintenance treatment programs are offered in Danvers and Gloucester. Clients receive consultations and daily dosing and after two or three days, most clients report alleviation from withdrawal and diminished cravings. Family, couples and individual counseling is offered, with most attending at least once a week.

All clients receive direct access to other levels of care at Lahey, including step-down, transitional housing and crisis services. Psychiatric treatment and medication management for co-occurring disorders is offered at each clinic, with transportation and help with legal matters provided. Education and prevention programs include school-based classes and workshops.

Extras

For expectant mothers, specialized care includes medical monitoring, parenting classes and substance abuse education. All OB-GYN visits are scheduled and coordinated with the primary physician.
