Parsons KansasThe Basics

The Labette Center for Mental Health is a counseling facility located in Parsons, Kansas—a community that is under-served in terms of substance abuse treatment. As a result, Labette developed an outpatient treatment program for substance abuse with both low-level intensity treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Originally opened in 1979 as a small facility with a three-person staff, over the years the Labette Center has grown into a facility with a credentialed staff of 60 all dedicated to serving the mental health needs of the Parsons community.

Treatment and Staff

Before a client is admitted, they are bio-psycho-socially assessed to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate track. The Labette Center serves both adults and adolescents who have been diagnosed with chemical dependency. Treatment options include two levels of intensity; a standard outpatient track and an IOP. The common wait time for enrollment may up to six weeks due to treatment shortages in the area.

The standard outpatient is an individualized treatment track allowing clients to attend once or twice per week depending on their plan. Group and individual therapy are facilitated by LADCs. Treatment practices vary on a case by case basis, but in general counselors utilize evidence-based practices and CBT techniques during therapeutic activities.

The IOP track requires attendance of nine-hours of treatment per week and is designed to give clients more structure. Three times per week, clients attend three-hour group sessions as well as individual therapy. Clients requiring dual diagnosis support work with their therapist on an individual basis to address their concerns.

Extras

The Labette Center also commonly treats clients struggling with gambling addiction due to the close proximity to casinos. Two therapists on staff have additional credentials for the treatment of gambling and other process addictions.

LCMH also works directly with the court system to meet mandated obligations, including attendance of 12-step meetings. Family therapy and couples counseling are also available.

Outside of mental health, LCMH also provides home, community and emergency crisis services. The home services are available for acute mental health diagnoses that cannot function in a standard outpatient setting. Specialized case management for adults, children and adolescents is available through the community services programs.

In Summary

The Labette Center for Mental Health provides outpatient treatment for an otherwise under-served community that focuses on building new coping skills, relapse prevention and an developing an understanding of addiction. Through a standard outpatient track or IOP, clients are treated with group, individual and family therapy. Gambling addiction services and dual-diagnosis support are also available, as are services for additional mental health and social concerns beyond chemical dependency.
