La Selva Group Review
La Selva Group is a CARF-accredited residential treatment facility that provides dual diagnosis care for adult men and women in the Northern California city of Palo Alto. A division of Momentum for Mental Health, La Selva offers individualized programming that includes both group and individual therapy. Treatment implements modalities such as DBT and psychoeducation along with holistic approaches like equine therapy, all in a safe, comfortable and supportive environment.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility is located in a quiet neighborhood a couple of miles away from the outpatient location where the clients receive daily treatment. The residence is a two-story, three-bedroom home with two bathrooms. The bedrooms accommodate two clients each and are fully furnished with full beds, dressers and desks. There is ample closet and storage space throughout the home as well. There is a large living room with leather couches and chairs, and a big screen LCD TV sitting atop the fireplace . Additionally, there is a stocked kitchen and adjacent dining room, and a back covered patio with tables and a gas BBQ.
For the most part, clients in La Selva’s inpatient program are either at the residential facility or at the off-site treatment building. However, residents can also expect weekly shopping trips for food and other necessities, monitored by a staff member.
La Selva provides breakfast and lunch at the treatment facility, along with a couple of snacks. Dinner is prepared on site by the residents on a rotating schedule.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient facility where residents receive daily treatment offers different levels of care and participation requirements. In addition to offering 24-hour support, a part of the program is also assisting clientele with regaining confidence and independence. There are full day programs with a variety of group sessions and at least one individual session per week. Residential stays are 30 days.
The groups cover myriad dual diagnosis oriented topics and gender-specific issues, as well as a range of other subjects such as trauma, shame and self esteem. Relapse prevention and anger management are also incorporated, along with medication management, as necessary. Treatment is primarily evidence-based, utilizing methods such as CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Twelve-step recovery is not a part of the regular programming at this facility.
There is a large staff of over 30 people, including medical doctors, nurses and Master’s-level therapists with credentials like LMFT, LCSW and CADC. Psychiatrists and psychologists are also part of the team at La Selva.
Extras
Therapists employ holistic approaches including art and music therapy, and equine therapy once a week.
At the off-site treatment facility, clients have access to a gym, pool table, foosball table and a music area with a piano and guitar. There are also weekly instructor-led yoga classes.
There are aftercare services and a weekly alumni group offered at the facility. Some clients who complete their residential program opt to move on to the facility’s supported sober living homes.

La Selva Group provides a safe and lovely residence in addition to a structured treatment schedule for clients in the dual diagnosis program. It aims to help men and women struggling with co-occurring disorders regain confidence and take the skills they learn in treatment and apply them to everyday interactions. The ultimate goal is for them to remain sober, stable and in long-term recovery.
