La Posta Substance Abuse CenterThe Basics

Located in Boulevard, Colorado, La Posta Substance Abuse Center is a part of the Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. This Native American organization aims to improve the spiritual, mental and physical health of the native community. Through a comprehensive range of services, clients have access to dental care, healthcare, substance abuse treatment and mental health support. Upon entering this outpatient program, clients receive an individualized plan of action that includes group and individual therapy. Cultural ceremonies such as sweat lodge ceremonies and family nights help clients embrace their heritage. Luckily, for those that are from the local tribes, treatment is free of cost.

Treatment and Staff

The outpatient program at this facility meets twice a week for two hours at a time. During treatment, clients receive group therapy, individual therapy, drug and alcohol education groups, family education groups, cultural ceremonies, random drug testing, AA/NA meetings, legal system advocacy when needed and free lifetime aftercare. Groups tend to run on the smaller size, between 10 and 20 clients at a time. Detox is not available.

Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, parenting, communication, trauma, an introduction to the 12 steps, processing and spirituality. Individual therapy happens once a week, with the client’s primary counselor. When it comes to the 12 steps, clients are required to attend several AA/NA meetings per week. Group discussions allow for a deeper look into what each step actually means.

Family education groups invite family members into the facility each week. Done in a group setting, the families and clients are able to learn how to communicate in healthy ways as they address such topics as boundaries and codependency. There are also educational discussions around the addiction as a disease model.

The staff includes licensed counselors. While there is no psychiatrist or medical doctor on-site, these appointments can be arranged as can referrals to outside agencies.

Extras

Sweat lodges, family nights and cultural classes help clients embrace their heritage. Prior to leaving the program, client maps out a discharge plan with their primary counselor. Meeting locations, employment and coping skills are all discussed.

In Summary

For the local tribe members in the Boulevard area, this low-intensity outpatient program is a wonderful way to begin recovery. By blending cultural ceremonies, the 12 steps and traditional therapy, clients are able to find spirituality and emotional healing. With free treatment and a lifetime’s worth of aftercare support, this program helps to carve out a path of sobriety.
