La Hacienda Treatment CenterThe Basics

La Hacienda Treatment Center is a 12-step based rehab in Hunt, Texas, a tiny town with pretty much just a general store and a post office. This central Texas spot (roughly two hours northwest from San Antonio) opened in 1972.

Accommodations and Food

Treatment and housing are separate at La Hacienda, which sits on a 40-acre campus surrounded by the Texas state bluebonnet flower and lush trees. La Hacienda accepts 60 adults and around 30 collegiate program clients between the ages of 18 and 24. The two groups are kept separate and each resident has a roommate. The therapy rooms where clients have group are classroom-like, with white boards, podiums and chairs set up classroom-style (as opposed to in a circle).

There are two televisions available—one in the common area in the detox facility and another in the recreational room where meetings are held—and clients can watch TV during free time before bed. Cell phones are prohibited but there are landlines in the rooms that can be accessed with calling cards. There are no computers allowed but plenty on-site for the clients to use to pay bills and respond to emails.

Food is prepared by staff chefs and residents and staff eat together three times a day. Every meal has more than one gourmet option to choose from; typical meals may include baked chicken or stuffed roast pork with either mashed potatoes or baked potatoes served with green beans or Brussels sprouts. There’s a full salad bar available for every meal as well. If clients don’t want hot food, there are deli options that include 12 choices of bread, meats and cheeses.

Treatment and Staff

The 30-day treatment plan at La Hacienda is simply group and individual therapy, as well as 12-step and lectures from the medical staff. The main difference between the regular program and the collegiate one is that where the adults are lectured on addiction and relapse prevention, the college students have sessions focused on more goal-oriented subjects like dealing with peer pressure, healthy relationships, leisure activities and self-esteem building. Clients receive two to three individual therapy sessions a week and attend required AA every day both off- and on-site where they are encouraged but not required to get sponsors. There are five doctors on staff so detox is available and included in the price. Dual diagnosis support is also available for clients that need it. There’s also an optional Christian program that uses Bible study and church services as a form of recovery.

Roughly 80% of the 75-member staff is in recovery; 30% have worked at La Hacienda for over 10 years and 60% for more than five. In addition to the doctors, the medical staff includes a licensed psychiatrist, nurses and support personnel.

A typical day at La Hacienda means waking up any time before 7 am for breakfast. At 8:15 am, clients go to their first group therapy session of the day and attend lectures after that until lunch at noon. Following lunch is group or individual therapy, and then lectures, exercise and free time until dinner at 6 pm, which is followed by AA at 7 pm. After dinner residents have free time until lights out at 11 pm.

Extras

La Hacienda boasts an on-site gym with weights and treadmills as well as a pool for the hot months. There is also a ropes course, an obstacle course of ropes that’s meant to build trust, communication, decision-making and cooperation. Extracurricular outings include lunch outside the facility, bowling and the movies.

The family program lasts three-and-a-half days. There’s not room for all clients to participate in this at the same time and in fact families have to RSVP for it in advance. The family days include group and individual therapy, meals and classes on addiction. Because of the size of Texas, La Hacienda has offices in each of the states most populated cities (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Bryan/College Station and Austin) for families that can’t make it to Hunt.

In Summary

La Hacienda’s emphasis on the 12 steps, therapy and a thorough family program blend perfectly. The staff is impressive, as is the fact that it doesn’t push a Christian program on any clients who aren’t interested.
