La Esperanza lynnwoodThe Basics

La Esperanza Health Counseling Services was founded in Lynnwood, Washington in 2007. With three facilities located within the Puget Sound—in Lynnwood, Burien, and Mount Vernon—La Esperanza Health Counseling Services caters primarily to the Latino, bicultural and immigrant community in these Seattle suburbs. La Esperanza, which means “hope” in Spanish offers outpatient treatment programs for those dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.

Treatment and Staff

La Esperanza offers both one year and six month intermediate and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). During the intake process, the counselor determines what level of care the client needs. Those who need residential treatment or detox are referred to an outside  program. Although the one-year program consists mostly of court ordered clients, La Esperanza does admit self-referred clients as well.

For both IOP groups, clients are required to attend three group sessions a week lasting two hours each. Most groups meet during the day, but accommodations can be arranged for clients with daytime work obligations. The groups use CBT and are run by a staff counselor. Topics include anger management, parenting, domestic violence, relapse prevention and addiction awareness. Group sizes are consistently small; the Spanish-speaking group usually has six clients and the English-speaking group typically four. As needed, clients are referred to outside support for domestic violence issues. Clients are required to attend at least two local 12-step groups per week. Staff randomly drug tests clients in both the one-year and six-month programs. La Esperanza does not offer specific dual diagnosis support.

La Esperanza has six CADCs on staff. Two of the counselors speak English and the rest work in the Spanish speaking groups.

Extras

La Esperanza offers an aftercare program for clients that meets once a week for a group session. Clients have the option for an individual session instead of group if counselors determine that the client needs more specialized attention. Sessions focus primarily on relapse prevention.

Summary

The La Esperanza IOP is ideal for Spanish speaking and bi-cultural clients in the Puget Sound area. The small groups allow clients individualized attention and an intimate recovery environment. With a bare-bones program that includes traditional therapy and only two outside 12-step meetings per week, clients at risk for relapse or who have little outside support may find they need more structure. But with special bi-lingual services, La Esperanza treats a specific demographic often overlooked in larger rehab facilities.
