La CasitaLa Casita Review

Located in the Downey, California, a city in southeastern Los Angeles County, La Casita is a six-month residential pilot program that was established in 1996. Created by the federal government to offer substance abuse treatment for Latina women and their children, the program is endowed by the LA County perinatal treatment and is part of the California Perinatal Treatment Network.

Accommodations and Food

La Casita has a homey atmosphere and the capacity for up to 18 residents. Most rooms consist of twin beds and can host up to three people, with the biggest room accommodating as many as four. There are also private rooms available for no additional cost.

All food is provided. Meals are designed to be healthy and when possible, there is a nutritionist on site. The program also allows residents to create their own meals and take turns cooking for each other. Examples of fare include tacos and rice, refried beans, chicken and beef stew. All meals come with salad, fruit, milk and juice.

Treatment and Staff

The multicultural services are bilingual in Spanish and English. La Casita facilitates an evidence-based curriculum that implements Seeking Safety, drug and alcohol education and relapse prevention. Residents receive individual therapy, vocational counseling and case management at least once a week. The program also offers 12-step meetings on-site and and encourages attendance at off-site AA/NA as well.

La Casita does not offer clinical detox but it can provide social detox and limited dual diagnosis support. Women struggling with more severe co-occurring disorders might need to seek additional help outside of this program.

The program normally employs around 15 staff members with credentials that include CSAC or CSACs in training.

Extras

La Casita provides vocational skills classes, evidence-based parenting classes, art therapy and children’s counseling. Additionally, the staff brings in outside agencies to expand clients’ horizons in different fields.

In Summary

La Casita is a bilingual substance abuse treatment program that offers support for Latina women and their children by offering them a safe place to reside, drug and alcohol therapy and education and vocational classes. Women looking to begin a foundation for recovery in a supportive, affordable setting might find a valuable resource by seeking help through this organization.
