La Amistad Behavioral Health Adult Program Review
The adult residential substance abuse treatment program through La Amistad of central Florida provides a structured and supportive environment that emphasizes healthy living, independence and learning new coping and life skills. Programming include regular group and individual therapy, medication management, expressive and experiential therapies, and psychoeducation. La Amistad has been serving the community of Winter Park for over 40 years and offers those with mental health or co-occurring disorders a safe place to heal with evidence based practices and regular 12-step support.
Accommodations and Food
The adult residence is set on a private campus and can accommodate 80 clients. The bedrooms are shared between two or three residents in each that are fully furnished with full beds, dressers, desks and closet space. The bathrooms are usually shared between a couple of rooms. The men and women clients are divided on different wings of the building.
Shared areas within the facility include a library, private seating space and sunroom, and dining room within the cafeteria. Meals are served buffet style and healthy snacks are put out throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The adult program offers treatment seven days a week, and is made up of several group therapy sessions per day and multiple individual sessions per week. The three phase program is comprised of an assessment and individualized treatment plan, growth and momentum and discharge planning. On average clients stay in the residential program for three months, though length varies from client to client.
Groups include a daily goals group, nursing three times a week, nutrition group that include meditation and relaxation five times per week, a peer lead group, and recreational therapy. There is also daily exercise integrated into programming on a daily basis. Treatment approaches are evidence based. Methods like CBT, DBT, EMDR, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and trauma informed care in offered. There are also daily AA and NA peer-led groups on campus.
Clients have psychoeducation and life skills training on a daily basis that address common issues related to those who struggle with mental illness. They work on improving communication, anger management and relapse prevention. The adventure and recreation therapy focuses on clients assertiveness, problem solving, team building and conflict resolution. Additionally clients participate in art and music therapy to enhance their expressive behavior skills.
On site staff include psychiatrists, nurses, CADC, LCSW, a certified recreational therapist and medical director.
Extras
There is a wellness center with a pool on campus that has a fitness center and group exercise space. Clients also have computer access at certain times on a daily basis.
A specialty aftercare planning group meets at the third stage of programming, and a monthly family program includes counseling and education.
