La Amistad Behavioral Health Adolescent Program Review
The adolescent program through La Amistad Behavioral Health in the Orlando suburb of Maitland, Florida provides boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17 with mental health and substance abuse treatment. Programming includes speciality groups that focus on trauma and co-occurring disorders and offers 12-step support, individual and group therapy, along with holistic approaches, like music and equine therapy. Accommodations and Food
The youth campus offers a modern two story facility that overlooks a courtyard with outdoor seating shaded with large umbrellas. The residence can accommodate up to 45 clients who share dorm-style bedrooms. The dorms are divided by gender and include common living room spaces, and a gymnasium. There is also a school on campus that client attend on a regular school schedule.
All meals and snacks are provided and served cafeteria style. The food is freshly prepared with a variety of options daily.
Treatment and Staff
The adolescent program at La Amistad places an emphasis on clients learn to identify emotions and learn healthy coping and communication skills while working on transitioning back into their homes and communities.
Treatment is broken down into three phases. The first is the assessment and diagnostic stage, which lasts anywhere from one hour to a week. The second is the growth and momentum stage where clients attend multiple group and individual sessions that address trauma, co-occurring disorders, anxiety, depression and more. The last step is discharge planning that includes figuring out an aftercare plan. This step can take as long as needed for the clients to feel ready to return home.
Group therapy is help up to seven times a day and covers a variety of topics and experiences. There is recreational therapy, peer groups, health and wellness and spirituality. Additionally there are medication management services offered throughout treatment. Treatment models in therapy include CBT, DBT, EMDR, Prolonged Exposure Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). There are also regular AA and NA meetings and book work for chemical dependency clients. This stage takes between three and eight weeks.
Treatment is provided by LCSWs, a nursing staff, and a staff physician and medical director.
Extras
There is a wellness center on campus where clients practice meditation, Yoga, and work out that offers fitness equipment and a pool. There is a monthly family program that offers education and counseling.
In addition to mental health treatment clients also attend schooling and participate in the academic program at the school on campus called the La Amistad Learning Center.
