Sioux Falls South DakotaKeystone Treatment Center Adolescent Residential Review

With two locations in South Dakota, Keystone Treatment Center has provided a comprehensive, individualized continuum of care since 1973. With CARF Gold Seal accreditation, the nationally recognized treatment center offers residential and outpatient programs for adolescents and adults. These services are based in 12-step and evidence-based practices, treating substance abuse, compulsive gambling, co-occurring mental health disorders and a number or other conditions. The adolescent program is for clients aged between 13 and 18, with all treatment separated by gender.

Accommodations and Food

On the same campus as the adults, adolescent clients are housed in a separate section of the 13-acre property. Rooms are shared with one other client and have adjoining bathrooms. Furnishings include twin beds, desks and side tables. Clients enjoy recreational activities like pool or foosball, can work out in the fitness room, run the track and walk around the trails. Though serviceable, the center has not been designed for aesthetic purposes. Buffet-style meals are served in the large cafeteria and prepared by staff on-site.

Treatment and Staff

Each client undergoes a week-long assessment to determine a tailored treatment plan. Medically monitored detox is available, as is medication management for those with co-occurring disorders. Nurses, doctors, psychiatrists and medical technicians ensure the constant physical safety of clients.

Together with LADCs, therapists begin a course of treatment that includes 12-step meetings, group therapy and individual therapy. Special focus is applied to individual concerns that arise for clients at this age. Dating, peer-pressure, family problems and leaving home are discussed, aiming to establish values and self-sufficiency in clients. Accredited teachers guide schoolwork to ensure clients maintain necessary course credits.

In addition to daily Big Book study, lectures, reflection and journaling, clients can attend religious services or speak with pastors to enrich their spiritual life. Social workers and cultural advisors are available to assist with community resources or with transitioning from home or to college.

Extras

Recreational therapy, a ROPES course, art and crafts and group activities are organized to foster healthy social skills. Native American cultural activities are also organized weekly.

The Family Program is essential for parents of adolescent clients and occurs twice a week. Families are asked to begin visiting on the third week of treatment, but can attend group or individual therapy as needed.

In Summary

One of the few centers offering a dedicated Native American track, all residential programs at Keystone offer a comprehensive list of treatment modalities. Though accommodations may not be luxurious, adolescent clients are sure to receive supervised, intensive treatment.
