With three locations in Dover, Georgetown and Laurel, Delaware, Kent Sussex Community Services is a CARF-accredited non-profit behavioral health services wing of the Central Delaware Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Inc. The facility offers substance abuse services on an outpatient basis as well as mental health counseling, HIV/AIDS education and a variety of other related services.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Kent Sussex Community Services starts with an initial intake evaluation in which clients create a treatment program that suits their needs. Both self-referred and court-ordered participants are welcome. There are no detox services offered at the facility, though referrals are made as necessary.

The most comprehensive substance abuse program at Kent Sussex Community Services is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which consists of group therapy offered three times a week from 9 am to 12 pm and an individual therapy session with an LADC scheduled at least once a week. There is also a standard outpatient track which consists of fewer group sessions each week. Sessions typically employ a mix of therapeutic models with an emphasis on coping skills, relapse prevention and 12-step recovery with AA/NA meetings hosted on-site every Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Gender-specific group sessions are also available. The facility aims to keep all of these groups small, with generally no more than 10 clients in attendance at a time. Whenever necessary, clients can also attend a family program if approved by their counselor.

Given that Kent Sussex Community Services also provides a full mental health program, those in substance abuse treatment can receive dual diagnosis care as well as medication management with an on-staff psychiatrist every Friday. There are also special group sessions scheduled which address co-occurring disorders. The facility also offers a full methadone and Suboxone program at the Dover and Georgetown locations.

Extras

Typically, after 30 days in the IOP, clients begin a stepped-down program with group therapy once or twice a week and individual sessions as needed. The facility also offers an aftercare program which consists of occasional group and individual therapy which can continue indefinitely.

In addition to IOP and standard outpatient treatment, Kent Sussex Community Services also offers a variety of other programs related to substance abuse recovery. Pregnant women and mothers may benefit from the long-term Smart Start program. There is also a drug court diversion program which consists of a series of individualized classes, therapy sessions and drug screens designed to meet court requirement for those facing criminal justice charges, an HIV/AIDS education program with case management and outreach prevention and a comprehensive youth and adolescent program which offers the same mental health and substance abuse services tailored to meet the needs of children and teenagers.

In Summary

With a long history of providing behavioral health care to Delaware residents, Kent Sussex Community Services can be counted on for a comprehensive IOP emphasizing 12-step recovery and a solid dual-diagnosis program. The facility also offers a variety of related programs including mental health counseling, programs for pregnant women and mothers, youth and adolescents and those in need of HIV/AIDS education and case management. In all, Kent Sussex is a strong community resource worth considering for those in the area.
