The Kent CenterThe Basics

The Kent Center for Human and Organizational Development has served adults, children and families contending with behavioral health issues since 1976. Located in Warwick, Rhode Island, The Kent Center serves the greater Providence community: 4,000 clients a year who struggle with mental illness, substance abuse and trauma. While there is no medical detox or inpatient program for those with chemical dependency, it does offer and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and regular outpatient care.

Treatment and Staff

The IOP is recommended for men and women with advanced substance abuse problems. These clients choose between attending IOP during the day or in the evening; it’s recommended that clients with co-occurring disorders go to the evening program, but someone without attendant mental illness who works and cannot make the day program can still attend. The day IOP clients are required to come three days a week for group and individual therapy for three to four months. Services are offered Monday through Friday between 9 am and 1 pm. Evening clients are required to attend three times a week also (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) between 4:30 and 8 pm.

IOP clients have the option of extending their care in the outpatient program. Clients in the standard outpatient program may also have significant substance abuse problems, but currently need less frequent intervention. These clients attend a weekly group or make a weekly individual counseling appointment. There is no time frame on this level of care; it depends entirely on the desire of the client and the treatment plan he or she makes with a counselor.

Groups between these three programs (day and evening IOP and standard outpatient) are largely the same. Clients discuss destructive behavior patterns, relapse prevention and trauma. There are also specific groups for women in recovery and evening groups offering dual diagnosis support.

A professional counselor leads each of these groups and facilitates one-on-one sessions. Apart from the licensed clinical team, there are interns pursuing licensure in addiction and behavioral health recovery and community volunteers who help out with logistics. There is also a psychiatrist on staff available for consultation.

Extras

The Kent Center provides transportation to and from treatment for IOP clients if they need it. Group therapy to serve specific populations—for veterans, victims of crime, victims of trauma and court-referred clients—is also offered. They also have crisis response services and housing as well as emergency services and school programs. It provides this drug and alcohol assessment on its website for free.

In Summary

The Kent Center has a lot to offer besides chemical dependency treatment. For a prospective client with dual diagnosis, the Center can offer great support, but this is pretty basic care. If a client is looking for a treatment facility more tailored to addiction specifically, this may not be the place.
