Keep it Simple Services, Inc. (KISS) is a Minnesota Model substance abuse treatment center in the Apas district of Cebu City, Philippines. As the second largest metropolitan area in the Philippines after Manila, Cebu City is home to a thriving 12-step community. KISS offers detox, inpatient and outpatient treatment to men 18 years and over. Treatment at KISS is primarily offered in the local dialect of Cebuano, but accommodations can be made for those who speak English and Tagolog.
Accommodations and Food
The facility is a large white stucco house with a TV lounge, dining room and communal outdoor space with a basketball hoop and smoking area. Up to 16 KISS clients are housed in dorms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms. Storage containers are provided for personal belongings.
All food is prepared on site by residents and included in the price of treatment. A variety of menu options are available for each meal.
Treatment and Staff
A stay at KISS can last around six months, maybe longer depending on the individual. The first phase of treatment is called orientation and is basically a detox period. The program does provide medical care and necessary medications during detox, but the goal is total abstinence, so ongoing Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is not offered. The primary care phase of treatment requires a four-month commitment. After this, the client enters a two-month re-entry phase that focuses on relapse prevention and building life skills. During this re-entry phase, clients have the option to live in a halfway house and continue their treatment at the facility on an outpatient basis.
Therapy is CBT-based, with regular individual therapy with an assigned counselor, in addition to group therapy twice a day during primary care. There is a strong emphasis on peer support and the 12 steps. On-site and off-site AA/NA meetings are available several times a week (all clients are expected to find sponsors and work steps). Daily routines include guided meditations, outings and time for written assignments. Support for co-occurring disorders is available in the form of individual therapy with a consulting psychiatrist and medication management.
The staff of KISS includes certified counselors who are also in recovery, a medical doctor and a psychiatrist who specializes in addiction recovery.
Extras
The final phase of treatment at KISS is aftercare, which consists of weekly group therapy and is available free of charge to anyone who completes all the other phases and stays clean and sober.
