The Basics
Karuna Recovery’s Crescent Heights sober living house is nothing short of luxury recovery located in the heart of West Hollywood. Residents are within walking distance of bustling Melrose Avenue, with its designer stores and trendy eateries, in addition to a bounty of 12-step meetings. Founders Lauren Philhower and Stacey Passas—both in recovery themselves—sought to create a close, bonded community where individuals are helped along in lasting recovery in a physical environment that is both beautiful and inspiring.
Accommodations and Amenities
Karuna’s Crescent Heights facility is a secluded house with a gated entrance surrounded by wood fencing and trees that provide plenty of shade. The décor is ultra modern with recessed ceiling lights, hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, a full-size kitchen and tasteful artwork throughout. The living room has a fireplace and a baby grand piano. The backyard area has a covered patio for seating and plenty of lounge chairs for sunning. The home is coed and accommodates 12 people in the main house with a guesthouse that sleeps four. The main house has two double-occupancy rooms furnished with twin beds and one master bedroom furnished with two bunk beds that sleeps four.
Amenities include high-speed Internet, cable TV, a desktop computer, local and long distance phone service, gym membership and laundry facilities. Unlimited coffee is also served. Clients are responsible for purchasing food and preparing meals.
Rules and Regulations
Clients must be 18 years of age and sober for at least 24 hours for admission. In addition to being caught drinking or using drugs, violence of any kind and theft are also grounds for termination. Curfew is at 11 pm on Sundays through Thursdays and midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. After 30 days, clients may arrange to stay out overnight. The house manager conducts random urinalysis testing and Breathalyzers on a daily basis.
Clients are assigned house chores and must have their rooms clean by 10 am every day. While Karuna does not offer counseling services, there is a mandatory house meeting one night a week that gives residents an opportunity to check in and share progress in their recovery as well as discuss house issues.
Residents who don’t have jobs or go to school are required to attend daily meetings or be involved in some sort of volunteer work. For working residents, a minimum of three AA or NA meetings each week is required and house slips must be signed. Though the length of time a resident stays at the Crescent Heights house varies, 90 days is typically recommended.
In Summary
Karuna Recovery’s Crescent Heights house offers a beautiful, somewhat luxurious environment in which residents can transition into the next stage of recovery. Moreover, though the house itself is secluded and private, it’s located in a section of Los Angeles that has plenty of restaurants and shopping. Add convenient 12-step meetings nearby, and you have pretty much an ideal place for spending time in recovery.
