Kartini Clinic Review

Located in Portland, Oregon, the Kartini Clinic is a pediatric behavioral health facility that provides a range of treatment services for eating disorders to clients ages six to 18 years old. The organization was founded in 1998 by Dr. Julie O’Toole and uses a multi-disciplinary approach to treat its clients with medical supervision included. In addition to its less intensive outpatient plans, it also offers short-term inpatient programs for those in need of medical stabilization.

Accommodations and Food

Those who attend inpatient treatment stay at the nearby Randall Children’s Hospital, which has a total of 165 beds available for residents. Within the hospital is a 24-bed pediatric intensive care unit with private rooms, twin beds, dressers and bedside tables. The rest of the hospital also includes common areas, shared play rooms and outdoor walking paths.

Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy and nutritious meals with the help of on-staff nutritionists.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial assessment and intake process, residents may be admitted to the inpatient program. Although the length of treatment may vary on a case-by-case basis, these programs are typically short-term and last for a few days to several weeks. Throughout the program (and once they are healthy enough to do so), clients attend individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Programs can also include family therapy which employs a Family Systems approach. Holistic treatment practices such as art therapy, yoga and animal-assisted therapy are also available. Because the program is limited to the treatment of eating disorders, dual diagnosis support is not available.

The staff at Kartini Clinic consists of doctors, nurses, case managers, nutritionists, LCSWs, LPCs, psychologists, art therapists, yoga instructors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Once participants complete inpatient care, they typically continue on to one of Kartini Clinic’s Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP). PHP tracks typically serve as a transitional plan designed to help ease clients into outpatient care—upon completing that, they can progress to the much more flexible Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which generally meets only once a week. Because Kartini Clinic is a pediatric program, all treatment plans are age-sensitive. Finally, those who complete primary care can work with staff members to develop discharge and aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, the Kartini Clinic is a specialized organization which offers comprehensive treatment for children and families dealing with eating disorders. All programs include evidence-based care practices, holistic supports, medical supervision and discharge planning services. Although those who are older or who require intensive support for co-occurring disorders may want to seek additional help, Kartini Clinic is a strong resource for those in need of pediatric eating disorder services.
