The Basics

Founded in 1998, Kartini Clinic is a pediatric behavioral health clinic in Portland, Oregon offering flexible and individualized treatment for children, young adults and families struggling with eating disorders. The organization was founded by Dr. Julie O’Toole and takes a medical, multi-disciplinary approach to treating young clients. Though the organization has since expanded to offer inpatient care through a local hospital for more severe cases, both Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are also available.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help the staff develop their care plans. Those in need of more intensive care or stabilization can attend the inpatient program as necessary though drug detox services are not provided. Though PHP and IOP use many of the same approaches, PHP is the core of the programming and serves as a step down or transitional option from inpatient care. While the specific hours may vary by client and their insurance plans, PHP runs from Mondays through Fridays with variable hours. Monday typically meets from 8 am to 6 pm whereas the other days meet from 8 am to 3:30 pm. IOP generally tapers off even further, meeting for flexible hours on Sunday.

Care plans include both individual and group therapy using a range of evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Family therapy is also included in the care plans with a Family Systems approach. Additional services include a range of holistic care approaches such as yoga, art therapy and animal-assisted therapy. Because the facility focuses exclusively on eating disorders, dual diagnosis support is not available.

The staff at Kartini Clinic consists of doctors, nurses, LCSWs, LPCs, psychologists, art therapists, yoga instructors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

As mentioned, more intensive inpatient programs are also available through the nearby Randall Children’s Hospital. This program is essentially a stabilization option for allowing clients to continue onto less intensive outpatient care. Because Kartini Clinic is a pediatric program which accepts program participants between the ages of six and 18, treatment is very specific to the needs of younger clients. Upon finishing a program, client and families can work with staff members to develop discharge and aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, the Kartini Clinic is a well-rounded, pediatric facility which offers flexible outpatient plans for clients struggling with eating disorders. All care plans include evidence-based treatment, holistic care, family support and individualized treatment planning. While older clients or those seeking a dual diagnosis program may want to seek additional help elsewhere, Kartini Clinic remains an excellent specialized resource for the treatment of eating disorders.
