Tacoma, Washington based Karis Collective is an outpatient counseling center that offers therapy services for a variety of mental health issues and life changes, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, sexual identity, eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) and divorce. Karis employs Master’s-level therapists with a vast number of specialties who work via individual, couples and group sessions. Treatment is available to most ages—from adolescents to adults—utilizing evidence-based modalities within a talk therapy setting.
Treatment and Staff
At the initial appointment clients are paired up with one of the therapists on staff to discuss their needs. This kind of treatment generally takes place in a one on one setting, and there is no set amount of time that clients need to commit to treatment. Additionally, they are able to switch therapists at any time if the client feels like it isn’t a good fit. Every individual session is 52 minutes long and in a quiet office where there is privacy and no distractions. Clients develop a goal plan and receive individualized attention.
There are occasional group sessions offered for a variety of issues including eating disorders, grief and loss, LGBTQ related struggles, codependency, gambling and life transitions. These sessions run about an hour and are no larger than 10 per group with one therapist running the meetings.
Evidence-based methods are applied during these treatment sessions. Common modalities are CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI) or mindfulness approaches. Though treatment is not based on the 12 steps or SMART Recovery, clients can receive referrals and recommendations for those kind of peer support groups within the community.
Karis Collective was founded by Charissa Walson who has been in practice since 2008. She heads up a staff of 10 (including the therapy dog, Blue) who are a combination of LMFT, LMHC, LICSW, CMHS, LMHCA and Master’s-level interns.
There are couples counseling options offered at Karis Collective, which also run for 52 minutes per session. Additionally there are therapy scholarship options for those who cannot afford to pay a fee.
The therapists at Karis Collective pride themselves on fostering more than just a place to come for talk therapy, but rather an environment that is conducive to making life changes and being supported in those decisions. Every one of the counselors welcome their clients with open arms and are all inclusive, caring and passionate about helping others.
