Coral Springs FloridaThe Basics

Karen Rainer is the founder and lead interventionist at Circle of Care Consultants, a recovery organization located 20 miles Northwest of Fort Lauderdale in Coral Springs, Florida. After graduating from Ithaca College with a BA in Business Management and Speech Communications, Rainer became involved in addiction and recovery oriented services in South Florida in 1998. Her work in residential treatment, crisis shelters, private practices and psychiatric hospitals gave Rainer insight into the need for intervention services and assistance for addicted populations.

For seven years, Rainer worked as Director of Business Development, National Marketing Coordinator, Court Assessment and Treatment Liaison and Client Advocate at treatment facilities across the state of Florida. She is trained to treat clients with co-occurring disorders, eating disorders, sexual abuse, trauma, PTSD and personality disorders. Rainer works with families and clients to develop individualized treatment approaches starting with intervention.

Rainer is a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS), Certified Intervention Professional (CIP), Certified ARISE Interventionist, Board Certified Interventionist Level II (BRI-II) and a Certified Mental Health Professional (CMHP). Rainer is fluent in Spanish as well as English and provides bilingual services.

The Background

Rainer opened Circle of Care Consultants in November of 2005 to offer intervention and care coordination services for individuals and their families. Rainer and staff facilitate interventions, traveling nationally as their services are required. Many staff members are themselves in recovery and bring their own experience and strength to their work with clients. Rainer was inspired by her work in traditional treatment facilities to bridge the gap for those in need of help getting their loved ones into treatment.

The Approach

Rainer has multiple meetings with the family prior to the intervention depending on the unique needs of each case. The number of meetings depends upon the complexity of the situation and acuity of the client’s addiction. The support team and the interventionist agree on a treatment facility that best suits their needs and budget. Family members prepare written statements describing the ways the addict’s behavior has adversely impacted their lives which they rehearse prior to the intervention.

Interventions typically last one to two hours and typically incorporate the ARISE Intervention Model, the Johnson Model and the Systematic Family Intervention Model. Once the client agrees to treatment, they are immediately transported to a treatment facility. The intervention team and family remain in contact throughout treatment and clients and families are encouraged to participate in 12-step meetings including AA/NA and Alanon.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Rainer and team arrange aftercare or continuing care services for clients and families who are seeking further support following the intervention and treatment. Families and the client are given every resource available including information on family therapy. Services include consulting services, case management, clinical assessments and legal consultation. If the client relapses and the family is feeling defeated, Rainer and the Circle of Care team provides additional resources and recommendations for the next step.
