Treatment and Staff

The IOPs at Kansas City Psychiatric and Psychological Services are tailored to meet the specific needs of various demographics. Gender-specific groups for men and women, peer groups for adults and adolescents as well as groups for individuals with co-occurring disorders are all available. Treatment is primarily group therapy sessions meeting three nights a week in three hour blocks. The adolescent group for those between the ages of 13 and 18 meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The adult group meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the co-occurring disorders group meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Family involvement is also an important component of treatment, with Thursday nights reserved for the loved ones of those enrolled in both the adolescent track and the adult groups while family members of the co-occurring disorders group meet on Wednesdays. There is also a women’s day group.

All programs implement DBT methodology and cover topics such as relapse prevention, anger management and coping skills. The 12 steps are not included in the program, however clients may ask the staff for referrals to local chapters. Individual therapy can also be scheduled independently between client and counselor.
