Oakland CaliforniaThe Basics

The Kaiser Permanente East Bay Hospital offers medical services to the Oakland, California community. Underneath its comprehensive umbrella of medical, mental and behavioral health services is the Chemical Dependency Recovery Program, located one mile from the main medical facility in downtown Oakland.

Three recovery tracks are available, including general outpatient, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a medical detox at the main hospital facility. There are both full- and part-time treatment tracks available with both evening and day sessions scheduled to accommodate the needs of clients with work, family and school obligations. Programs vary in intensity and are tailored to meet the individual’s needs.

Treatment and Staff

Kaiser’s CDRP has treatment options for both adults and adolescents, but prior to enrolling in treatment, clients must call the main office to schedule an appointment for a screening. Staff determine the appropriate level of care for each client. All services are available in Spanish and interpreters are available to help clients with language barriers. Additionally, families are also supported and given the opportunity to attend support groups to address behaviors that may be contributing to their loved one’s struggles in recovery.

The standard outpatient track is called the Early Recovery Program and requires clients to attend therapeutic activities for eight weeks total, meeting for one weekly 70-minute group session available Monday through Friday. Most groups are co-ed except on Wednesdays when gender-specific groups are available. Specialized groups including the African American Men’s Group and a Wisdom Group that helps clients see their recovery through a new lens are also available. Make-up groups are scheduled on weekends.

The IOP is an intensive 21-day program requiring clients to attend group therapy as well as psycho-education sessions that provide information about the nature of addiction. There are also specialty groups for clients who have completed detox and are receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with a Suboxone prescription. A Spanish-speaking group, LGBT support group and Pain Management groups are also available.

Clients are required to attend 12-step meetings in tandem with their treatment. If a client is not comfortable attending AA/NA meetings, LifeRing meetings are also hosted on-site once per week.

All therapeutic activities are facilitated by credentialed mental health professionals who have experience working with those who struggle with chemical dependency. LCDCs, Psychiatrists and Physicians are on staff at all times and dual diagnosis support is available through specialty groups and with medication management per recommendation by the clinical staff members.

Extras

Aftercare services are available through the Continuing Recovery Program. After the two months of initial care concludes, clients may continue attending groups for a five month duration (longer upon request). Clients are encouraged to attend one continuing care group per week, but may attend more if they need additional support. Aftercare focuses on relapse prevention techniques and encouragement through 12-step support.

In Summary

Kaiser Permanente’s Chemical Dependency Recovery Program offers substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents. Clients can choose between a standard day or evening outpatient track and an IOP with aftercare services available to further support the recovery progress. Under the care of credentialed mental health professionals, clients may receive MAT, medication management, detox and participate in evidence based therapeutic care. CDRP in Oakland is covered for most insurances, but co-pays may vary depending on the coverage.
