Juneau Youth ServicesJuneau Youth Services Review

Since 1961, Juneau Youth Services has provided residential and outpatient chemical dependency and mental health treatment for Alaskan youth. With several locations throughout the Juneau area, this organization offers a variety of services. Both short- and long-term treatment is available and treatments plans are highly individualized. Since most of the clients are between the ages of 12 and 18, these facilities strive to involve family members. Through family therapy and education groups, families can participate in the recovery process.

The five residential programs are for clients 12 to 18, with the exception of a transitional living program that provides apartment-style housing for at-risk youth up to the age of 22. The Montana Creek Residential Facility serves youth with co-occurring disorders. The Cornerstone Emergency Shelter serves youths who are wards of the state, as well as those who are runaways or homeless, providing shelter and support anywhere from a few hours to several weeks. The Lighthouse Residential Facility is a program for girls who have a history of multiple behavioral problems complicated by issues like abuse and addiction. The Miller House Residential Facility provides rehabilitation and mental health treatment for those with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Depending on the facility, the number of beds per house ranges from five to 15. Clients stay in converted homes, sharing dorm-style bedrooms with one other person. The rooms feature twin-sized beds, dressers and carpeting. Each facility also includes a dining room, therapy rooms, offices and a common room with a TV.

Three meals a day are provided for the clients, who take turns helping in the kitchen. The staff oversees the preparation of healthy and hearty food options and special dietary requests can usually be accommodated. Caffeine is not permitted.

Treatment and Staff

Juneau Youth Services offers a variety of services, including individual counselinggroup therapy, dual diagnosis support, family counseling and schooling. Prior to entering a program, each client must undergo an initial assessment. The group sizes range from five to 20 clients at a time and treatment length depends on the individual. Detox is not available on site, but the Cornerstone Residential Facility provides short-term crisis intervention. This may include temporary housing for a client who has just completed detox or been released from the hospital and is awaiting placement at another facility.

When it comes to therapy, evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT and DBT are often used in all of the programs. Miller House specifically uses the Stages of Change model in the treatment of behavioral issues. The length of time spent in residential treatment depends on the facility and the needs of the individual. Treatment consists of a mixture of group and individual therapy, with group topics such as anger management, employment, trauma recovery and life skills.

The outpatient program offers up to 90 days of treatment, including eight weeks of group counseling and one hour per week of individual counseling. Depending on the level of care needed, clients enter Intensive Outpatient (IOP), outpatient or the aftercare program. The topics covered here are similar to those discussed in the residential program, while the aftercare program places a heavy emphasis on relapse prevention.

This organization sees family involvement as a crucial part of recovery. Through family therapy and educational groups, family members can understand the nature of addiction. They are also able to work on communication and boundaries with their loved one.

The staff includes licensed counselors, social workers, therapists and house managers. Referrals are made for those who need the care of physicians.
