Jullo Substance Abuse Review
Jullo Substance Abuse is a behavioral health organization that provides treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Located in Durban, the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, the program is based in the Merebank district, in a clinical facility that houses its detox and inpatient programs. The organization also offers an outpatient clinic, called Help Point, in the New Town Centre neighborhood of Durban.
Jullo Substance Abuse was founded by Dr. Lochan Naidoo in 1995. Naidoo is an internationally recognized addiction medicine professional and an advocate of the bio-psycho-social and 12-step models of treatment. He is a member of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM), has served the Central Drug Authority of South Africa as a drug expert and sits on the International Narcotics Control Board in Vienna. Naidoo and his wife, Julie, who is an advanced practice nurse, have committed their lives to providing treatment and dispelling the stigma of addiction and mental health issues in South Africa.
Accommodations and Food
The Jullo Substance Abuse residential program is located in a large three-story building. The space offers room for five clients in the detox ward and the rest of the facility is separated by gender. Rooms are double-occupancy, with twin beds and basic furnishings, including desks and closet space. The building has seminar rooms, lounges, outdoor courtyards and a fully-equipped gym. Residents get three healthy meals a day prepared by the staff.
Treatment and Staff
Clients begin the 28-day program by undergoing an assessment. Detox is provided on site if necessary and withdrawal symptoms are medically managed. The process generally lasts three to five days until the client can move into the inpatient program. For clients with an opiate addiction, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is also available. Upon completion of the residential program, ongoing medication management for MAT clients is offered on an outpatient basis. The Jullo outpatient program is called Roots and is offered from the Help Point location. Outpatient tracks are completely individualized so the duration, intensity and frequency of treatment depends on the client.
Treatment in the Jullo programs works within the structure of individual and group therapy, with both co-ed and gender-specific groups available. Evidence-based practices are emphasized as well as the 12-step philosophy and psychoeducation. Clients are strongly encouraged to attend off-site AA/NA meetings in their communities. Clients requiring dual diagnosis support benefit from targeted groups and psychiatric care.
The multi-disciplinary team of Jullo includes psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who specialize in addiction. Other staff members include dance and music therapists, activity specialists, spiritual counselors and 12-step facilitators. The staff have a combined 100 years of experience in addiction recovery.
Extras
Clients at both Jullo locations are offered modern interactive computer centers with audio-visual systems. These resources are used for educational and vocational pursuits.
