JourneyPure at The River Review
JourneyPure at The River provides residential substance abuse treatment on a scenic rural campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, near Nashville. JourneyPure also operates JourneyPure Emerald Coast, a residential facility in northern Florida. JourneyPure has operated The Rive since 2015, where dual diagnosis support and gender-specific tracks are available for both men and women.
Clients receive highly-individualized, holistic treatment plans that incorporate evidence-based therapy, recreation, nutrition and life-skills coaching. JourneyPure also has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that many of its residential clients attend for aftercare.
JourneyPure’s regional director is Rick Buckelew and its director of women’s programming is Tamara Roth, PhD, who has written two memoirs on her journey to recovery. Dr. Roth partners with clinicians in the nearby Vanderbilt University Medical School to provide cutting-edge therapeutic and medication interventions for JourneyPure clients.
Accommodations and Food
The recently-built campus features upscale rustic lodges in a tranquil setting on the West Fork Stones River. Residents are housed 12 to a lodge and three to a bedroom in each lodge. The lodges are spacious and well-appointed, with modern kitchens and common areas for recreation.
JourneyPure believes nutrition is a cornerstone of successful recovery, and it employs a dietician to help clients create healthy meal plans. Clients are responsible for creating their own meals in their lodges, but staff provides organic food that clients may request throughout the week.
Treatment and Staff
Upon arrival, clients have a bio-psycho-social assessment. They then receive a customized treatment plan that includes individual therapy at least four times each week and group therapy and psychoeducation classes several times a day. Clients in need of detox may begin their treatment with medically-supervised detox which typically lasts three to 10 days.
Most clients complete their initial residential treatment plan in 30 to 45 days, though some may choose to extend their stay. JourneyPure has a men’s and women’s track that may be ideal for those suffering from relationship trauma and abuse. There’s are also customized treatment plans for professionals that addresses the specific ways addiction has affected their career trajectory. The professional’s track also address licensure issues, and JourneyPure can aid with monitoring requirements.
Clients begin each day with a 6:30 am yoga class and meditation before a full day of therapy and classes. Therapy at JourneyPure includes CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which incorporates breathing techniques, yoga and meditation. Residents also have recreational therapy—including equine therapy, art therapy, music therapy and hiking. Groups and classes may include journaling and address topics such as nutrition, handling anxiety, relapse prevention and developing emotional intelligence.
JourneyPure also introduces clients to peer support meetings including 12-step and non-12-step (such as SMART Recovery) so they can find a group that supports their philosophy and recovery goals.
Extras
JourneyPure believes the entire family must heal for the most effective recovery. It encourages clients to invite family members for family therapy, if they feel it would be beneficial.
Additionally, JourneyPure has developed a recovery app that enables its staff to stay in touch with alumni for up to a year. The app helps clients create accountability by recording their recovery activities. It also helps inspire and educate clients with new recovery and health content.
The treatment team at JourneyPure is dedicated to creating an effective aftercare plan for each client that may include on-going individual and family therapy as well as outpatient treatment at JourneyPure or another facility in closer proximity to the client’s home.
