British Columbia CanadaThe Basics

Joshua House Recovery Ministries is a small network of three residential treatment homes located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Founded in May of 2004, the facilities are in the Fraser Valley, just outside of the Greater Vancouver area. Joshua House offers a three phase, faith-based recovery for adult men that incorporates the 12-step framework and traditional therapy. Treatment is affordable and helps clients to get back on their feet and become contributing members of their communities.

Accommodations and Food

Upon admittance, clients are enrolled in treatment at Junior Home, a five-bedroom house with a 10-bed capacity. The men are given a comfortable living arrangement in shared rooms as well as a stable environment conducive to recovery. Clients are housed two per room, with twin beds and linens provided. All residents are responsible for keeping their space clean and the house in order. Meals are prepared family style by the residents.

Following a 30- to 60-day phase at Junior Home, clients then step down to Middle House for their second phase. Also a 10-bed home, Junior Home allows clients more freedom and a little less structure. Bathrooms are shared and general household items are provided. There is a common living room with a TV and DVD player that can be used during approved hours. Residents are expected to fill their days with therapeutic activities and service work.

The Senior House is the third phase of treatment and JHRM’s aftercare home. Five private bedrooms are available for those seeking a sober community prior to returning home or embarking on an autonomous lifestyle. To qualify for admittance to this home, residents must work or go to school full-time.

Treatment and Staff

Joshua House Recovery Ministries combines a faith-based program with the 12-step framework and attendance of local meetings to support lasting recovery. The typical length of time spent in the program is 90 days to six months. Some clients remain in the aftercare house for up to a year. Prior to enrolling in the program, clients are brought in for an assessment with the staff which determines whether the client needs detox, medication management or additional care.

The first stage at Junior Home is the most structured, with clients checking in either from the street, other recovery homes or court referrals.

The second stage of recovery transfers clients to their second home and includes them getting part-time work or school. Therapeutic activities are decreased but replaced with service work and additional meetings. The clients are expected to take a leadership role with members in the house as well as members in the Middle House. If clients want to get a full-time job, they will have to apply to move to the final house for aftercare.

The third phase is considered aftercare, and similar to a sober living environment, giving clients the camaraderie of other men in recovery and the autonomy to live lives as active community members.

All clients are required to attend church, meetings and counseling sessions. Group therapy and individual therapy are facilitated by LADCs with a Christian emphasis. All clients are drug tested to ensure their abstinence.

Extras

Clients remain connected with men living in the other JHRM houses as they progress through treatment, acting as leaders for other residents to look up to. Job placement services are also available through local construction and landscaping companies.

In Summary

Joshua House Recovery Ministries provides Abbotsford, B.C. men an opportunity to recover from substance abuse through a faith-based program of recovery. Residents are accommodated in one of three homes with varying levels of intensity, and progress through the program as they gain sobriety time and a means of supporting themselves.
