The Joseph R. Briscoe Treatment Center is a 46-bed residential treatment and detox facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana—a mid-sized city in the southwest region of the state. Home to many companies in the gaming and petrochemical industries, McNeese State University and Sowela Technical Community College, Lake Charles is also known for its lakes and waterways.
JBTC was acquired by Pathways Community Health in July—an organization that has provided residents throughout Louisiana and Missouri with low- or no-cost medical health, mental health, dental and substance abuse services since 1974.
Accommodations and Food
JBCT treats up to 28 clients in its 28-day residential program, with additional beds in the facility reserved for medically-supported detox treatment. The residential program is co-ed and usually treats more men than women. Residents are accommodated in a dorm-like facility usually with 12 to 15 per room and large YMCA-style gender-specific bathrooms.
Food is provided daily by a catering service and dietary restrictions can be accommodated if they’re brought to the attention of the program director upon admission. TV is available in common areas, but viewing time is restricted to the weekends.
Treatment and Staff
Residents attend a minimum of three group therapy sessions each day, the last of which is after dinner. Groups are led by Certified Addictions Counselors (CACs) and Master’s-level Social Workers (MSWs) and use a variety of techniques including CBT. Staff are also able to treat co-occurring disorders.
Residents also attend on-site 12-step meetings and addiction education classes. There are three counselors for the residential clients, giving the program a client-to-staff ratio of one-to-nine. The adjacent detox facility is staffed by nurses who are able to provide residents with medical care if needed.
Residents may not bring cell phones to treatment and the center does not permit internet access. Facility phones are available for out-going calls to family. For recreation, residents use the on-site basketball and volleyball courts and take walks on the facility’s grounds. After seven days in treatment, residents may receive adult visitors on weekend afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 pm.
The Joseph R. Briscoe Treatment Center provides a comprehensive 28-day treatment program with an abundance of group therapy options. Residents leave treatment having developed the skills to process their emotions and better understand how others experience them. As part of the Pathways Community Health network, the Joseph R. Briscoe Treatment Center also provides residents with options for continuing their mental health and addiction treatment—such as an outpatient track and sober living facilities in its state-wide network.
