The Basics

Located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, John F. Kennedy Behavioral Health offers high quality substance abuse and behavioral health treatment to the city’s residents. Rooted in the 12 steps, this facility focuses on teaching clients the principles of AA/NA while administering traditional therapy as a way to process emotions and learn new behaviors.

Treatment and Staff

The services offered through this program include intensive outpatient (IOP), outpatient and opiate replacement therapy. While methadone maintenance is available, medically monitored detox is not.

IOP meets three times a week, for two-hour sessions. The program uses group therapy, as well as one hour of individual therapy per week. Groups are usually between 10 and 15 clients and create a safe environment for healing. Group topics include relapse prevention, trauma, introduction to the 12 steps, anger management and life skills. Individual sessions give clients a chance to receive one-on-one attention. In addition to treating substance abuse, co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety are also addressed. CBT and DBT are used in both group and one-on-one settings.

The 12 steps are an important component of recovery at JFK Behavioral Health. Clients participate in discussions about the steps during group, in addition to attending lectures that explain the Big Book. They are required to attend AA/NA meetings during their free time. There are two NA meetings on the premises per week.

The outpatient program offers a less intensive schedule, meeting once a week for two hours. Clients are still able to receive an hour of individual therapy, as well. The topics are similar to those in IOP, although there is a greater focus on relapse prevention. The length of time spent in this program depends on the individual.

In addition to providing therapeutic support for recovery, the clinic offers opiate withdrawal support. Through methadone maintenance, clients can safely come off of opiates. Weekly check-ins and attendance at on-site Methadone Anonymous meetings are required. The length of time spent on the medication is decided on a case-by-case basis by the counselor and client.

The staff includes several limited practice nurses who can prescribe medication and certified substance abuse counselors.
