Interventionist Jean Mackie is the owner and founder of the Los Angeles, California organization, Mastering Addiction Consciously. Mackie is an intervention and recovery specialist, whose patrons range from high-profile individuals to financially challenged clients. Mackie is a Bachelor’s-level certified intervention professional, a Board Registered Interventionist (BRI), a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and grief recovery specialist. Additionally, she has been certified as a criminal justice professional, which allows her to work with the court system and assist with drug and alcohol-related cases. Services she offers besides intervention include recovery case management, court liaison and addiction counseling which also includes dual diagnosis support.
Mackie founded Mastering Addiction Consciously in 2005. Her first passion was drama, and she received her Bachelor’s degree in theatre/drama at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. After her own personal journey to find recovery, she experienced a personal “divine” intervention and made a career switch. Mackie believes addiction is a growing epidemic and has plans to expand her company, so that she can assist clients on a global level.
Initially, Mackie has a phone conversation with family, to discuss the situation and schedule a detailed assessment. The comprehensive recovery assessment, which is done in person, includes the best course of action to assist the client. Additionally, she gathers extensive information regarding the client’s level of addiction, and helps the family plan the proper treatment plan. All interventions are individualized to fit both the client’s and the family’s needs. The intervention process is conducted over a two-day period. During the first day, the intervention is rehearsed. Families and friends rehearse and coordinate the intervention process, and all treatment and transportation arrangements are scheduled.
The intervention takes place on the second day, and typically takes between one and three hours. Mackie uses a motivational approach, where participants stress love and concern for the client, and provide positive reinforcement to encourage the client chooses detox or residential treatment. Mackie follows up with her clients, provides recovery case management, assists participants and clients with finding appropriate recovery support groups, including AA/NA and Al-Anon and individual therapy.
Post-Intervention and Summary
By offering recovery case management services, Mackie facilitates a comprehensive aftercare program. She works closely with clients and their families, and draws from her own experience to offer hope and encouragement for her clients.
